Purchasing Oyster Card

Hi all

I will be arriving in London on 4th October at Euston and was wondering where the nearest place is to buy an oyster card. I am travelling onto Shepherds Bush so was hoping that I could get 1 at Euston tube station. Anyone able help me out?

Downstairs in the London Underground ticket office is the only place within the station where you can get one.

If so, it might save a lengthy queue at the ticket office.

I think transportphoto is right that there is a london travel information booth on the main concourse that can issue them as well - I know they can at Victoria and Liverpool St. Click

This might sound silly but as its my first time buying one what exactly do I ask for? Obviously an oyster card but do I ask for them to put a certain amount of credit onto it

Yes. They'll then charge you that amount plus a £3 deposit - you can get this back if you return the card. Some stations have a minimum amount they can put on a card (I think £5 is common).

Interesting to see p.d87 finding it difficult to understand. I live outside London and have never invested in an Oyster card as the complexity looks very daunting. Is there a very simple idiot's guide available to help prospective first time users?

Yes there is a vending machine that sells Oyster cards at Euston LU ticket office however it only takes coins. There is a information office where you can buy oyster cards, however you may have to pay the £3 deposit and put £5 credit on.

Due to the Tube strike on Monday, most ticket offices are expected to be closed. You will still be able to buy them from special Oyster vending machines (provided the station is open) or the TfL Travel Information Centres, of which one is on the concourse at Euston. I'd advise you buy one from there anyway.

Note also that you may find it very hard to get to Shepherd's Bush by Tube due to said strike. If there are no Tubes then you may be better off getting the Overground Euston to Willesden Junction and changing for the Overground to Shepherds Bush. Services are not as frequent as the Tube so check timetables.

Thanks for the info. I was getting worried about that as I only knew about getting there by tube so the overground will give me another/my only option.

There is buses, but they will be jammed and the city at grid-lock!

Thanks Mojo for pointing the strike out, I would advise the Travel Info Booth (as I said above) which is op pl 10 or (if busy) venturing out onto the street and find a newsagent with the Oyster logo displayed, should be one about somewhere!

Unfortunately this will probably be too late for the OP but I got my oyster cards online & posted out to me - the NEXT day. What's more unusual is that they came from LAURENCEKIRK in Kincardineshire (North East Scotland for the geographically challenged).
