Is it possible to buy a Leicester plusbus ticket online?

I've already got the rail ticket to Leicester, but as it's Megabus there's no opportunity to purchase a plusbus ticket at the time of booking.

I normally get the plusbus at the East Midlands Trains ticket office at St Pancras before travel but this time I'm not sure there will be time.

You can purchase at any staffed station - whether or not you'll have issues with it being Megatrain I can't say.

Are they valid/available with Megatrain tickets, those being rather a special case for which the NCoC don't fully apply?

Been discussed previously - I am of the view that Megatrain T&Cs can add to, but not overrule, the NRCoC. Megatrain is bound by the TSA which specifies that all tickets are sold subject to the NRCoC (which in turn does not allow TOCs or agents to amend these conditions).

Also, small point of pedantry - PlusBus tickets don't require a rail ticket to be valid, but they may only be purchased with one.

I've never had a problem getting a Leicester plusbus with a Megatrain ticket - in fact when I've purchased the plusbus at St Pancras I've never been asked to show the rail ticket.

I did once try and buy the plusbus at East Croydon though, and they said they couldn't issue it - not an issue with the rail ticket, it just didn't seem to come up on their system.

Some ticket offices don't know how to issue them I've found. They only show up when [station] is entered as origin and [station+bus] as destination. I don't know if there's also a problem if the TIS is set in journey planner mode.

So OK to buy Plus Bus tickets with my Britrail Pass?

PlusBus is only supposed to be sold for the printed origin or destination on the ticket. That said, plenty of places would be happy to sell it.

I wasn't aware I could buy plus-bus on arrival. Could for example I arrive at Northampton station with my Priv ticket (or just TOC card if I used Midland trains) & buy the plus bus on its own?- would be handy for getting to the rugby ground.

If you are travelling from St Pancras, the Great Northern King's Cross TVM will sell them, but only the two by the Great Northern gatelines.

Useful to know, but as I've only got 15 mins to change from Thameslink to East Midlands Trains at St Pancras, I think I'll have to buy the Plusbus on arrival at Leicester this time.

Worth doing homework before purchasing a PlusBus as they cover quite a wide area and are priced accordingly. On a couple of occasions I've purchased a PlusBus and then found that a cheaper day rover, covering a smaller area but still enough for what I wanted to do, was available to buy from the driver.

I think they can be helpful if there are a number of bus companies in the area, each of which sell day tickets which are only valid on their own busses - with PlusBus, you needn't take into account such shenanigans as they are typically valid on all busses in the area.

They didn't when I tried this on Friday. Came up as No Fares Found.

And to contrast, I have found that sometimes, thanks to my railcard, Plusbus tickets can be cheaper (or around the same price) as just a single ticket on the bus!

I guess the issue is that they shouldn't be sold without a valid ticket from outside the zone. I expect some people are wising up to them being cheaper/more flexible than normal bus tickets and buying them on their own.

That's the case where I live too!

Also a Plusbus is usually valid on all operators in the area whereas bus rover/ranger tickets are often operator specific.

A particular case in Oxford comes to mind where the bus I was on was terminated short to regulate the service. Everyone was chucked off with the driver telling us to catch the bus just behind which was going to the same place but was operated by a different company. Cue a huge amount of grief when the driver of the second bus told passengers that their tickets weren't valid on his bus because they were issued by a different company.

I just flashed my Plusbus ticket and was waved on, much to my amusement!

It would be disappointing if they removed them from the machines.

I was at Kings Cross earlier so I checked this out on the GN TVM's next to platforms 9-11.

They still sell Plusbus ticket. To get it to show you have to select 'Buy tickets from Another Station' then type in the station name you want the Plusbus ticket for and it will show up as an option.

I was under the impression that the bus companies in Oxford had to now accept each others tickets. Is that not the case?

If I'm going to Oxford for the weekend I will buy my 24 hour ticket in Oxford as it lasts 24 hours. It's more expensive than plus bus but plus bus only lasts for the day and not 24 hours.

It was a couple of years ago so it might have changed. I'd been to the Kassam stadium to see a rugby match and was making my way back to the station from Blackbrid Leys estate (no. 5 bus if I remember). There was lots of traffic and we were terminated short and told to get on the bus behind us which I think was operated by Stagecoach.

The people who had issues and had to pay again were passengers who'd paid a cash fare, I'm not sure what the position was with people who had bus rover/season tickets.

I couldn't resist having a word with another passenger who was also going to the rail station and had paid a cash care (twice). They had no idea that Plusbus tickets even existed.

I tried to buy a plubus ticket from the TVMs near platform 9 at King's Cross on Friday and couldn't do it. I tried Bradford (Yorks) to Bradford plusbus and it just came up with no fares available.

I will have another play with it tonight or next week to see if I can get it to sell any others.

In Oxford, there are "smart zone" tickets valid on both Stagecoach and Oxford Bus Co/Thames Travel; there are also "city zone" tickets valid only on Oxford Bus Co/Thames Travel; and also other Stagecoach-only tickets too. (And certain other idiosyncrasies apply too - with some Oxford Bus Co tickets that are generally valid on Stagecoach buses not being valid on Stagecoach N-prefixed night buses, etc).

Plusbus is valid on Stagecoach, Oxford Bus Co/Thames Travel, and the one Arriva route too - the main catch with plusbus is that it is valid for the calendar day, rather than for a 24-hour period from the moment of purchase, like all the other.

Fairly sure I've bought Plusbus tickets for Bristol from a FGW TVM at Didcot in the fairly recent past.

Notingham Plusbus is currently only 30p cheaper than the citywide bus 'Kangaroo' ticket.

But: Nottingham Plusbus is valid on the major operators but not some of the smaller - such as Nottingham Community Transport (who run the majority of the cities tenders) and Marshalls.

The Kangaroo is also valid to Hucknall on the tram - the Plusbus boundary is Moor Bridge at Bulwell on the tram.

Pays to check each individual city. Leicester Plusbus is £3.50, flexi bus ticket is £5 - a significant saving.

Really, the TVMs should be set up such that you can press a button when buying your ticket to add it on. If it's sold on its own it could be used fraudulently i.e. without an appropriate rail ticket, which is probably why it has been stopped.

I don't understand why it didn't just stay as a destination to be issued as part of the through ticket.

I think that change was to prevent a different fraud: using the return portion of an Origin - Destination Plusbus period return ticket on buses in the destination town on more than one day within the validity of the railway ticket.

I think that change was to prevent a different fraud: using the return portion of an Origin - Destination Plusbus period return ticket on buses in the destination town on more than one day within the validity of the railway ticket.

In Germany, they get around this by taking advantage of the fact that nearly all tickets are booked by looking up a connection and then booking a ticket that is valid for that connection, rather than simply issuing a ticket "from STP to LEI via Any Permitted" or whatever, even though such a ticket will be valid on other services and possibly other (permitted) routes as well. (For print-at-home, this suggested connection will be printed on the ticket as well; at the ticket office or a TVM you'll get a separate slip with the suggested itinerary.)

If you buy such tickets with the +City option (roughly equivalent to PlusBus but including local rail, tram etc. travel within the appropriate PTE boundaries), they will say that that the +City option is valid only on dates X and Y (being the dates of the Out and Return portion of the connection), even though the tickets themselves (if Anytime rather than Advance tickets) are usually valid for two days in the Out direction and thirty in the Return direction.

This does mean that if you return earlier or later than you had originally planned, you can't take advantage of the +City option for local travel to the station. On the other hand, you don't pay extra for +City; it's automatic if you book with a Railcard discount and the originn and/or destination is inside an area that has +City. (Used to be just the destination, but now you can have +City at both ends!)

If you don't have a Railcard, then you can get "City Mobil", which also lets you travel on local transport at one or both ends, but you have to pay extra for that and what you get is essentially a PTE day ticket which you pay the appropriate price for. So the only advantage is that you don't have to have the exact fare and don't have to navigate unfamiliar PTE TVMs at the destination; you don't save any money. This is more like PlusBus, I suppose, except that it takes advantage of the wide availability of PTEs in Germany, rather than creating a "surrogate PTE" in the form of PlusBus in order to be valid on busses of multiple operators.
