Funny incident in Manchester this morning with somebody going backwards instead of forwards when given the RA and smacking into a rear parked train. Anybody else come across this happening before? It's a first for me, that's for sure

Just a rumour......

Happened before... 2004. 10.30pm.

Class 158 FTPE train, falling apart, poorly maintained.

Loose direction selector switch North-S-E-W (forward, backward, neutral and neutral) had fallen off.

Guard picked it up and put it back on.

Driver and guard changed ends.

Driver set off, gave the train power.

Button was on upside down.

Lurched backwards and coupled at 10mph to a FNW 156

3 cleaners on the 156 went flying, head first.

That was covered up

A 450 was reversed into another at Waterloo 5 or 6 years ago, IIRC the one nearer the buffers was partly derailed and it took two platforms out of use for a while.

Not much - just some pride I think

It is a terrible design and this has happened a few times at Glasgow central although the driver should really have noticed as it must have been at neutral when he put his key in, rather than "off". (And for the driver, anything but funny)

That was a 12 coach train that was reversed at full throttle into the buffers, the driver was working his day off as well!
