Pub Recommendations

Just thought I start a thread where we can all recommend our favourite pubs or refer people to decent pubs.

Anyway, I'm heading to Norwich this month - need to know the decent pubs and if there are any to avoid.

My usual tipple is Guinness but I don't mind the odd pint of Strongbow.

Especially for railway folk at Derby there is the Brunswick Inn on Railway Terrace just down from the station.

Dates from 1840 when the North Midland Railway opened.

Doublelocks in Exeter is nice - its on the old ship canal and is popular despite being a fair trek from the city centre

Hmm, just got it down in my list of must visit pubs when we go

What's the food like anyway? A lot of the time, we end up at a Weatherspoons so somewhere different will do us the world of good.

I can offer a very topical recommendation: I've not been to Cambridge in yonks, but when I re-visit in May I'll be heading to the Champion of the Thames on King Street. Cosy and great atmosphere.

For anyone making a trip to Sheffield, follow the river north-west towards Kelham Island, where you'll find the Kelham Island Tavern and the Fat Cat, two fantastic CAMRA pubs in a beautiful ex-industrial district where nineteenth century warehouses and factories and being joined by newer inner-city apartment developments. The Fat Cat is one of my favourite pubs in Britain - never less than a dozen real ales behind the tiny bar, and great pub food too. Last time I popped in for lunch I ended up staying for six hours.

In Berwick-upon-Tweed, one of my favourite towns to stop at on the ECML, the Barrels Bar on the Berwick side of the old bridge is a cosy and popular local pub, which live music sometimes too.

Here in Glasgow decent real ale pubs are hard to find (the locals preferring to cut to the chase with Tenants and fine malt whiskey ) but two atmospheric sixties timewarp boozers are The Laurieston, just south of the river on Bridge Street, ten minutes walk from Central Station and near Bridge Street underground station, and The Steps Bar on Glassford Street, five minutes south-east of Queen Street station.

Oh, and since the OP is a lover of the black stuff, the best to enjoy pint is (in my humble opinion) to get that SailRail ticket sorted and head to the John Hewitt on Donegal Street in Belfast. Live music most nights and a lively and welcoming mixed crowd.

As to Guinness, it's one reason why I love Grand Central and First Great Western not to mention First Scotrail as I know I can always get one onboard on of their services, sadly East Coast don't supply it - do Virgin supply it on their services?

FWIW if I'm in Norwich I usually end up in either the Marquee (Loud Obnoxious Rock Pub with a pool table) or the Belgian Monk (Belgian Beer Bar). I can recommend either.

The beer in the Monk is better (not that that will matter if you're drinking Strongbow or Guinness...) but the Marquee has the edge in the music stakes.

I like your choices in Newcastle East, I live the other side of the ECML from The Cumberland Arms, so naturally, I'm there a lot of the time

The Chillingham, a stones throw away from Heaton Depot and adjacent to the ECML, is a lovely pub as well.

The Telegraph, behind Newcastle Central, was voted best pub in Newcastle in 2009 (by Best Bar None)... really nice pub, but only really worth going in the summer, when you can sit upstairs on the roof terrace, seeing the trains into Newcastle on one side, with the High Level Bridge and a decent view of the Tyne on the other

I'm sure theres other good ones in Newcastle, but, when under pressure, so to speak, they all disappear

The White Barn in Cheshire.

It's a chain (Hungry Horse) but the thing that makes it special for me is the way it's away from it all.

It's right next to Cuddington station (one stop from Delamere) so I usually have my lunch then go for a walk through the forest :P coz I is cool!

Wolverhampton - Great Western. Hellfire pub, under the railway viaduct and adjacent to Low Level station. A holy grail of sorts for real ale fans over the Midlands if the reaction of Loughborough CAMRA when I mentioned I was from there was anything to go by.

Codsall - The Station. A Holdens establishment with excellent beers that is the downside station buildings.

Stamford - The Tobie Norris. Ancient building again excellent.

For all you real ale drinkers, head out the back entrance of Edinburgh's Waverley station (Market Street. I think) and head up the steps, halfway you'll find Edinburgh's smallest (and one of my favourite) pubs. Not a real ale drinker myself but there is a fine selection and also a lot of whiskys.

Oh and it does food just about all day!

Myself and and another forum member were in there one evening last year to find a few unknown enthusiasts looking up railway Fotopic galleries on the pub's computer!

Don't forget the Nor Loch in the station itself, good place to spend a couple hours with the Half Way House.

One of the attractions of the Half Way House is all the railway stuff inside not forgetting how small it really is but I guess that's part of the charm of the place.

Last time I was at Nor Loch they only had Deuchars as something decent, and it was a bit overpriced.

I think they change quite regularly but they often have ales from local breweries

For anyone into Rock There is a pub called the Grand Central next to Manchester Oxford Road Station and it is a great pub

If you're interested in foreign bars, In de Wildeman near Amsterdam Centraal is great. No open sundays

The 142 being the same one all the way! To make matters worse, we passed a 153 going in the opposite direction,
