Hightown Station also had a good pub next door for a few scoops.

The pub is OK, but the one time I tried it there was no food available. "The Railway" at Formby proved a worthy alternative.

Hightown Pub used to be an excellent pub but it recently changed hands. It's now rather basic and I still don't think there is any food. That said, I went last week for a drink and they had the fire going so that was nice. The Railway Formby an Ember Inn. So a bit of a chain pub. Not saying its bad though. I like the Weathersoons: Queens Picture House on South Road by Waterloo Station.

I won't have time on this trip, but this is sowing the seeds of a future Northern Line pub crawl. Merseyrail's 15-min intervals mean not too long to wait for the next train - but at my age, lack of toilets on the trains might become a challenge!

Might be worth starting a Merseyrail Northern/Wirral Line pub crawl thread as there are indeed a lot of options at many stations on the lines. St Michael's is near Lark Lane and I notice at Freshfield I believe there is a micro little pub called Beer Station (their sign is based on old style railway signage).

Any more suggestions of stations on the Merseyrail lines with good pubs near by....

@yorkie Perhaps this could form the basis of a forum meet at some point in 2020 before the class 507 and 508 are replaced with the new Merseyrail stock?

Aughton Park: out of the gate, turn left, walk about 5 minutes, the Dog and Gun is on your left. Used to be a bit scruffy but I'm told it's been tarted up a lot now.

Very much like White Lion in West Kirby. New Brighton and Neston are also good places for a mini pub crawl.

Railway Inn, Meols obviously gets a mention but that is a Hungry Horse, so don't get too excited.

I am led to understand that Sefton Council staff have been known to attempt the Trainathon: get the train from Southport and off at each stop for a pint at the nearest bar. Points lost if you don't make the next (15 minute) train.

The Great Mogul at Maghull used to be OK when I last knew it. Back in the sixties my grandad used to collect his LMS pension (7 bob a week!) from the booking office at Maghull and then adjourn to the Mogul for a stout. But the Old Roan had a bad reputation some years ago as the sort of place where you could be glassed. Not sure if the pub near Town Green is still going.

I saw yesterday that the pub at Town Green is in fact closed, it's now a Co-op.

Correct, it was a fairly rubbish pub anyway.

The next nearest is what used to be the Town Green Inn opposite Town Green School, formerly the teachers' lunchtime haunt it's a fairly fancy gastropub now. Or a fair bit further away but still walkable is the (much nicer) one by St Michaels' Church.

The Stanley Arms; I agree. A group of us had a good New Year's Day walk from Hall Road station to Town Green a few years ago, calling in at the Stanley Arms, and we all put it down as a place to return to. The one by the school calls itself a wine bar; I saw it on Friday from the route 315 Ormskirk-TownGreen-Downholland-Haskayne-Halsall-Shirdley Hill-Southport bus, a pleasant drive.
