Can I suggest a spring pub crawl on a stopper from Manchester to Crewe and/or Stoke? This would work in either direction, possibly visiting the following:

Manchester - Piccadilly Tap
Heaton Chapel - Heaton Hops
Stockport - Olde Vic or Magnet?
Cheadle Hulme - Platform 5 or Chiverton
Wilmslow - Brewhouse
Crewe - ?
Alsager - The Lodge is well recommended
Stoke - Glebe

Can I suggest we combine the crawl with a meal?

My preference would be to end at Crewe, though we may struggle for a decent pub beyond Cheadle, as there's nothing close to the station I can think of after there, we may be best heading to Stoke. Alternatively, we could start at the "end" and finish in Manchester?

EDIT TO ADD:
Heaton Hops would be an additional worthy stop: http://www.heatonhops.co.uk/

It doesn't have to be a pub at every station - just where there is one a) near the station and b) worth visiting.

Agree re the meal. The crawl can go north or south - would be good to end at a "big" station for ease of people getting home.

That's a decent choice being an easy 4/5 minute walk from Heaton Chapel station, might be just worth bearing in mind though that it doesn't open until 13:30 each day.

Crewe has Hops and the Borough, but neither is close to the station. All the pubs close to the station are crap

Agree! The only recommendation for Crewe would be OK places to eat on Nantwich Road, as short stroll from the station. Oh - and only being a couple of stops down the line for me to get home....

Evening

The Olde Vic in Stockport doesn't normally open until 5pm unless Stockport County are at home. Here's a link to details

Cheadle Hulme has a good micro pub on Mellor Road just opposite the station and between the Crewe and Stoke lines. It's called the Chiverton Tap.

In Wilmslow, the Brewhouse and Kitchen (once a Wetherspoons) is close to the station and brews its own beer

If you are going to Stoke, the Waters Green Tavern in Macclesfield near the Station is worth a visit. Note it closes in the afternoon during the week.

Hope this helps

PS - the What Pub site is run by CAMRA via information from local members. It can be a bit out of date in some areas - in others especially around Manchester it is pretty well up to date. Access is available to all whether you are a member or not.

If I was to go to any pub in Stockport it would be The Magnet. By far and away the best pub for miles around and has won numerous awards for its fabulous selection of beers.

Only a 5 min walk from Stockport station and well worth it :)

You must have long legs then :). But would only have been a couple of minutes from Heaton Norris.

There are plenty of interesting pubs on the Stockport "Slope of Beer" stretching from the Hope past the Magnet down to the Crown.

And if Tiviot Dale were still open, it would be handy for all the interesting pubs and bars around the Market Place. Stockport pubs demand a day out on their own.

But we digress. The OP is looking to do a crawl by train round several locations and in Stockport the closest to the station is the Olde Vic with the Armoury nearby.

I forgot to mention a couple of places close to Levenshulme station. First of all there is Freds which is on the A6 at its junction with Albert Road which is the road that runs under the station bridge. Beer choice and quality are tip top. Opens at 4pm during the week and has a bizarre policy on Thursdays of all cask beers being £2 whether you have a pint or half

100 yards away towards Manchester on the same side of the road is Station Hop a micro pub that opened about 6 weeks ago.

Revised opening times are now Monday-Tuesday CLOSED Weds 5-11 Thurs 5-11 Friday 4-12 Sat 1-12 Sun 3-10

Hope this helps!
Cheers
