Pub at Huddersfield Station

I've got an hour to wait at Huddersfield tomorrow evening. I see from the National Rail maps there's a pub there. What is it like? Going to have a suitcase with me but quite fancying somewhere to de-camp for a short while.

There are in fact TWO pubs at Huddersfield station. The Head of Steam linked to above is the most well-known (and I'd say more welcoming!) and is in the old L&Y booking hall, with the Kings Head at the opposite end of platform one. Both have a decent selection of ales, if you're into that.

The Kings Head is better for choice (and imo) quality of ales. It's a little bit spit and sawdust, but it really adds to the charm, and the regulars are actually quite welcoming. The HOS used to be excellent, but from experience, they seem to have rested on laurels, and not kept up in terms of other real ale pubs in the area. If you have a little longer at Hudds, walk out of the station, and take a left on John William Street, walk for 4-5 mins until you're under the bridge, and you'll find The Sportsman- a fantastic real ale pub, with a wonderful art-deco interior- well worth a visit.

Anyone know if there are any door staff issues on either pub?

Just so I know whether I can wear shorts or not to travel I !!!

You will probably be the best dressed person in the Kings Head (Station Tavern). But it is a great boozer (and I will be in there at about 8, so you can buy me a pint of Farmers Blonde)

The Kings Head is better in the dead of winter as it has an open coal fire, which really kicks out some heat.

There's also a pub called 'The Cherry Tree' not far from the station which probably has the cheapest beers out of the pubs in the town centre.

The station door was closed till 2000 but boy is the other door hard to spot!
