Hi guys

New to the forum and was looking for some advice, Next week i'm booked to do my PTS course and was wondering if anyone could recommend any websites or books, DVD's to revise before hand?

Once ive got the pts card what sort of job can & cant do?

Yes there is a written and practical exam. Once these are passed you can work on either ac or dc lines or both if required

TBH, the tests are quite easy if you have studied and listened to what was said. Its just basic railway 101 stuff.

Only addition of course is to learn the correct phonetic alphabet.

Print this off. It's the Network Rail key point card for PTS course. Learn all the terminology, distances, railway signs, phonetic alphabet.

In fact you will probably have a question on pretty much everything covered in it.

You don't really need to swot up on PTS, everything you need to know will be covered on the course. If it isn't, I would be worried.

The link NinjaJihad posted will most definitely help you, 90% of the answers you need are in there. I have some advice for you. I am mid way through a 10 day PTS course right now I passed the AC/DC assessment and the PTS, I have one assessment left at the end of next week then I'm all set and ready to go. Hopefully I can give you some information and advice on the course itself.

The Assessments:
The assessments are easy. Just pay attention to the tutor it may be boring but he is teaching you for a reason and it could save your life. The questions are multiple choice which makes it much easier. Here are a few questions I can remember from the top of my head: (the phonetic alphabet is no longer in the assessments, but you still NEED to know it)

Who would you contact to find out if any OLE (Overhead Line Equipment) is turned off?

ECO (Electrical Control Operator)
COSS (Controller of Site Safety)
Site Warden
Lookout (LKT)

When are you allowed to use a mobile phone when working on or near the line?

At any time, there are no restrictions
Only when authorized to do so by your sponsor
When you are in the position of safety and are standing still
When working alone

The course:
I have not done much practical yet but I will update you on how it goes. You will learn about manual handling, first aid and fire safety. You will need steel toe cap safety boots.

Hope that helps you guys out, I would have liked to have been able to read something like this before I started the PTS.

Don't be nervous. You've no need to be if you listen and take in what you are told. The questions are based on the course that you will sit, if you've listened and learned then you don't need to know the questions in advance.

Day 1 by with today, Tomorrow is a visit to the lineside and the exam itself.

Is the exam multiple choice?

Yeah it is. I done the course last week. As long as you listen to what is being said by the instructor and make any notes that may be important.

I passed mine

I got 100% apart from 1 letter of the phonetic alphabet. My card gets logged on the 9th, doing the DCCR on Monday.

To be honest I'd be extremely surprised if anybody failed their PTS, it's probably harder to fail than pass!

Thanks to everyone who posted and helped me out, I passed the PTS on Tuesday afternoon.

Are network rail quick at getting the cards sent out?

allow 5 working days on how fast it can be sent out. If it hasent turned up by the end of next week I'd phone the people who done your training.

I have passed a PTS course on a Heritage railway ok it's different from the main railway, now what I need top know how do you go about doing the course to be a track walker on the main network thanks.

I am based in Skipton so could be Doncaster basically I would like a job on the railway and without experience its proving difficult.

Think the experience you've done on the Heritage rail would help you to get a job on the national railway.
