Good afternoon all

I thought I may share some thoughts on my unsuccessful computerised part 2 of psychometric test.

I had my test last week Tuesday in Leeds with Northern for depot train driver in Newton Heath.

I have passed paper test part 1 with first and second test enhanced pass marks as required then passed the rest of part 1.

When it came to second part of test on computer I did well with flashing square and passed it then unfortunately failed on ATAVT pic test and passed 2 hand coordination test being denied SJT and MMI interview.

My question here is do I have still two attempts on SJT and MMI and assume that only one go at ATAVT.
Examiner said I did well overall but not good enough to make it through. Also she said I can still reapply and sit interview if I get a chance. Yesterday email stated I can’t reapply for any position not sooner than 5 months since the test. Also back in May this year I applied for mainline trainee train driver with Northern and application is still live “under review” so I hope to make it through as I kept applying for last 5 yrs and can’t even throughout app process.

Also I am thinking to resit the the rest of the tests privately but can’t decide yet as I am still recovering from this bad day. It’s frustrating to know how close I was but I guess I have to take it on my chin and move on.

SJT test is not easy one as I failed on it twice with TPE when applying for trainee driver so I will purchase sjt practice tests book from how2 become and also found atavt practice software with traineetraindriver website so hopefully it will help to pass next time.

I applied for trainee train driver to find out if I have what it takes to pass psychometrics and I was not far away from success.

Hope to smash it next time.

Any advice or suggestion is more then welcome even there is really nothing to advice on

Hopefully my time will come!!!

Good luck to everyone who is doing your tests. Practice and have a good rest before exams.

My only advice on the ATAVT picture test is do not guess!
It’s a tricky test as the picture only flashes up for 1 second but only ever put what you know was definitely there even if you only select 1.

You state you have failed the same test three times, so maybe driving a train is not for you?

You got that wrong. May be my wording but tests I failed twice was online SJT test nothing to do with psychometric test for Northern. So it’s irrelevant. That won’t count towards my2 attempts whatsoever. I am just saying SJT can be tricky one too so have to practice on that one too.

It was more like a entry test during a application process. Nothing like OPC psychometrics

Do you get marked up if you miss something in pictures?? Would you know??

To answer your question if you have failed on any part you have lost a life. Doesn’t matter how well you have done and the paper results won’t count as a result.

The SJT in the OPC is or was when I did it anyway only used to help set the questioning for the MMI. We were told there was no right or wrong answers in it. I’d be sceptical on that personally as I remember one or two of them basically meaning you’d be a danger if you answered in a certain way and I’d imagine that wouldn’t go down very well.

The TPE one you did im guessing was the online application one which has far as I know isn’t subject to the two strikes. It’s just to whittle numbers down.

I would say it’s heavily negatively marked as in lose more points if you guess wrong rather than just miss one out.
If it wasn’t then you could just tick all 5 every time

Strange that Northern said you have 5 months to reapply, I believe it is 6 months until you can retake the tests. If your Northern driver application progresses after 6 months have passed you will be fine (I believe) to continue with it, but not beforehand. When/if you get to resit the tests, it will unfortunately be your second and last life, but the company may accept your paper passes and you may only have to resit the ATATV, SJT and MMI. I’ve been in that position, not nice and 6 months seems ages but it flew past and I just used that time to continue practicing. I failed the MMI first time round, but the company I re sat the assessment with made you do them all again. Good luck going forward.

I was told by examiner that all tests I passed are valid for 5 years. So it should be just one strike on ATAVT and two strikes on SJT and MMI as I haven’t done them?!
I don’t understand your bit saying that paper test won’t count as a result?? I was told I don’t need to resit any of the phase 1 tests.

Why you had to resit all the paper tests again?? I don’t understand?! I was told your results are hold in national database. If you passed all tests in phase 1 they are valid up to 5 yrs. only case would be if you failed any test in part 1 then you would have to resit all part 1 tests again. Computerised part 2 is different. Any test you pass is again valid and you just re take one you failed on. That was my understanding of assessor explanation of it

I only lost life on ATAVT test as I passed flashing square and coordination test too. I don’t have to do them again.

You may not have to retake with them but other tocs can do what they want, if you fail any part of the standard tests you only have 1 life to redo any tests, if its the just the ones you haven't done then fine but I'm pretty sure that if you fail them then thats your 2 lifes done, it doesn't matter how many you pass, you either pass them all or you don't.

I passed all the paper tests that were sat as a Stage 1, then progressed to Stage 2 and passed the computer tests but fell at the last hurdle with an mmi (examiner) from hell. She was stone faced and unhelpful at the time, but others on here who had tests with her said she was pleasant and encouraged answers from them?? Go figure… But you lose one of your two lives with whatever stage you fail at (if fail is to standard level, not enhanced). So I had 1 life lost. I could have sat the tests again with a company who accepted all my passes and let me just do the mmi which would have been less stressful, but the next application that I progressed with was with DB Cargo and they made me resit the full suite of tests, which you do all in one day, not separate days for paper and computer tests. It all depends on the TOC or FOC. I passed that Second time thankfully 8-)

Sorry mate looks like you may be right. I’m going off what others have done and they’ve had to resit it all but this is all dependent on time scales and tocs by look of it. Looks like they can just ask you to do the whole lot again if they want to though regardless of you passing those.

Some tocs may also want enhanced results where others don’t so again depending on the results they may want you to resit it.

It does get quite complex with the standard/enhanced thing. If you don’t pass to an enhanced standard the TOC want but have passed to a standard then you don’t lose a life with the OPC. However I’m not sure that if you fail to achieve the enhanced level twice with the same TOC then that TOC would regard it as two lives lost with them? Regardless good luck anyway and hope you achieve your dream.

Does anyone know if conductor tests are 2 strikes only? TIA
I don’t think you do psychometrics on that role mate. It’s just a english and maths test then medical from what I read in role description

Have you thought about buying some of the practice test software available? I know some people think it’s unnecessary, and I can see both sides of the argument. I wanted to give myself every chance to pass the tests so as well as researching every possible buzz-word by the search function on here and making notes, I also bought some of the How2Become Train Driver software and a couple of books.

I think the book info definitely helped me re-write my cv and applications as I got much more success at being sifted after re-writing as per examples in the books. I had a search on eBay and managed to get them a decent price and have since passed the tests at small cost so it seemed worth it.

No the SJT is the situation judgment test, used by some TOCs, if failed it, that’s a life for those TOCs that use it. The SJE is used as part of the MMI.

You shouldn't disregard the SJT so easily.

It's an important test that's used to judge how your mind works and how you think.

Many TOCs even make qualified drivers do an SJT when they apply.

A manager once told me that whilst the SJT has no right or wrong answers, there are the answers that are suitable for someone who wants to be a train driver and those that wouldn't be.

There are some VERY "wrong" questions / answers on the SJT, like saying it's a good idea to speed up on a motorway when tired.

As others have said, you have two attempts to pass, regardless of which section you fail on.

Wrong in the terms of what makes a good driver, however you answer based on what you would do.

Whilst your answer isn't technically wrong, it does point that you shouldn't be a train driver

I think speeding up on the motorway when tired is always a bad idea.

There is 100% wrong answers in the SJT!!

A customer asks you a question:
Answer choice; walk off and ignore them

I think my comments have been misunderstood.

Every SJT I ever took told me to answer with what I would do in each situation honestly.

The answers are rated against the behaviour expected of a train driver.

If you're answering based on what you think is right, and you wouldn't actually do that in the situation, then you're not doing the test the way you're supposed to.

See my original comment about the OP failing the SJT multiple times.

I think that all that it is about is that SJE that is part of The OPC has no pass mark, therefore whatever answers you choose you will pass to the next stage. These answers will however impact your interview.

Whilst completing SJT as part of recruitment anywhere else, will see a pass mark and choosing good answers is a key to be successful. Hence it was possible for the OP to fail them.
