Why was an EMT Mk3 in the consist?
To provide sufficient brake force for the formation probably.

Free to be corrected - but I'm pretty sure I've read that it couldn't and/or didn't.
The prototype power cars did work with rakes of production mark 3s at the very beginning of delivery of HSTs to the Western Region, but there are no instances AFAIK of a prototype power car being used in combination with a production one in a formation, so you could be right.

Certainlt our EMT power cars and east Coast have a new design of 36 way jumper to improve reliability of operation and water resistance. No reason in theory why the prototype could not be done the same and work in multiple with a EMT/EC one.

If the prototype will not be able to work with any of the production power cars, then what is the point in getting it running other than to use it to pull a set of coaches?

Surely if the prototype is going to be ready for doing any mainline running for charters etc.... It should be on the basis that a production HST power car is on the other end for backup?

The intention is to use it standalone; like a single-ended loco.

In fact, didn't this one actually have a secondary cab for shunting, or was that feature removed before prototyping?

We can't change the past and the stupid decision that lead to only one of the two powercars being scrapped; but it's absolutely the right thing that the one remaining is preserved. Be good to ultimately get 1 of each of the 4 'ages' of HST powercar preserved; 1 x prototype, 1 x Valenta, 1 x VP185 and 1 x MTU (although I suspect rather more than that will end up being saved beyond mainline use).

Yes, it did have a small cab at the rear, plus its fitted with standard buckeye & drawhook at the back too, which means it can be coupled to any locohauled airbraked coach.

Also fairly sure they were both modified to work with Production trailers during testing too.

Look forward to this running once again. IIRC the shunt cab power controller only operated to notch 2, so don't expect any blunt end running outside of a preserved line. If it is able to run with production coaches and power cars, then so much the better.

I had a look round it today and noticed the 36 way jumper is at high level so would need an extra long cable. On the subject of jumper cables EMT use the standard 27 way and EC use a new design of jumper and CDL which requires a tool to be fitted/removed so needs a 'new to old' cable to allow them to be compatible and are like gold dust to find (i've known services due to lack of these cables!).

It shouldn't be too hard to fit it with production TDM equipment even if it does have two cabs, it would provide it with the oppportunity to do some main line running rather than just running up and down the line between Leicester and Loughborough.

HST's don't use TDM equipment to talk to one another. Only the DVT modified power cars used TDM to multi up with Cl.91. AFAIK HST use a "own class only" electrical multi system.

Now, a rear cab is a surprise to me. Not saying it wasn't there but I have no clear memories. Agree, it did have buckeye.

As to working with production Mark3 traillers ...

I have no recollection of any combination of these prototype power cars with anything but the asigned intermediate cars from prototype or previous coaching stock. That said, I seem to recall some Mk3 coaches may have joined the set for final trials and may have become HST in later years.

It still has it. And it was available to view at one of the NRM's 'cab-it' events afew years ago.

As for working it production stock, theres a photo in one of Colin Marsdens books, HST Silver Jubilee, of the prototype PC's on a rake of production coaches on test.

re. mainline running and the scrapping of the other prototype power car.

How difficult would it be, when the HST fleet comes to withdrawal in the next few years, to fit a replica prototype front end to a production power car?

I'd prefer it if it was left as is, even if it can be made electrically compatible...

Sounds similar to the shunting toggle fitted just inside the cab doors on Class 90 electrics. I'm sure they were all isolated after an accident.

Is 41001 still at NL does anyone know?

I wonder if they ever ran 41001 with a production set and P/C, would they relivery a rake and production P/C to match?

Might want to ask permission before offering free-for-all photography of said vehicle ;)

Might I suggest an email to the 125 Group would be a good place to start. They more than likely have an agreement in place with the NRM that restricts access to authorised persons only.

A quick google indicates that somebody already has taken the liberty: http://www.flickr.com/photos/barry13092/
