Protocol of "Do You Want Anything?"

Been asked many times but I'm not sure if the same protocol applies everywhere?

If someone says "do you want anything?" - are they offering to pay? Or are they just offering to get it for you?

Sort of depends on context. If it's a pub, they are almost certainly offering to get a round. If I'm going to a supermarket and I ask my housemate that question, I'm probably expecting he will pay for it when I get back assuming it's more than something really cheap like milk or bread. If I'm going to somewhere more expensive than that, e.g. to IKEA for some furniture, I'd certainly be expecting that he pays for what I got him.
