Promotion to a driver instructor/manager

Any advice on how to progress into an instructor role/driver manager?
Do i.r.o courses or open uni courses help?
Is there a limit to how many times u can apply as iv seen loads of gd drivers fail the presentation/interview tests.
just curious as you never see many threads about the instructor or management roles.

Instructors are often (in my experience) 'asked' to apply for the role. I have seen a few people who might make better driver instructors than me fail in the recruitment process, partly because their face didn't fit. Wrong and unfair, but that is how it often works.

As for the recruitment - an interview combined with a presentation and short theory tests on route knowledge, traction and rules was the chosen method, but varies - subsequent applicants for the same role have since had to prepare projects.

As far as driver managers goes, I would say that certain individuals, mostly instructors but not always, are again given a subtle hint.

Both roles however are not necessarily for everyone, there are pros and cons to consider before taking the plunge, and although a lot of drivers will insist that becoming a DI is the first step towards management, for me that is certainly not the case - I couldn't afford the drop in pay for one thing, irrespective of the fact that I wouldn't touch the DM job with a bargepole. Horses for courses.

As said most Drivers are asked if they would like to apply for the DI job.

I would never do the managers job after seeing the amount of stress DMs go through.

The get a driver managers job you most frequent answer to a question must be yes and the louder you shout yes the more chance you have of getting the job. If you even consider to say no you won't last long in the job.

You don't need any extra qualification to land either role but having A1, A2, (D32), L12, RCA, TOLO, ITQ, ILM or any H & S qualification will help the application process.

I'm going out on a limb here but I'm guessing a working knowledge of English isn't a pre-requisite
