Promise to pay - advance tickets

Does anyone know if you can obtain a promise to pay for an advance single type of ticket?

As in you can select the advance ticket on a TVM and then obtain a promise to pay for the advance price

I've been getting a bit of cash as general Christmas gifts and would find good use to purchase my rail tickets but my local station TVM is card only! (I haven't had chance to look myself yet if it is possible or not)

No this isn't possible, there are varying advance cut offs depending on the TOC, but all will be at some point before departure. It is not possible to buy an advance ticket retrospectively. If you wanted to buy one with cash you'd need to travel to a ticket office before travelling (And the cut off)

Just put the cash into a bank account, or arrange to give it to a family member who is happy to have cash and they do a bank transfer to you.

Get a pre pay card fromthe Post Office.

The NRCoT say:

If you do so, the price of the Ticket you purchase will be the same as if you had bought a Ticket at the station from which you first departed, including any Railcard discount to which you are entitled.

If an Advance ticket was on offer at the TVM then there would be no grounds for charging you more for a walk-up ticket. Of course in practice we know that it doesn't work like that - it's yet another area where the industry ignores its own rules and does what it likes.

You can deposit it into your bank account at a Post Office (for most banks).
