345071 out doing some fault-free test runs this week on GWML. Starting in the early hours Wednesday. Here’s the first moves - 5G01 & 5G02. I had heard it was starting Tuesday but those trips aren’t in RTT.

Showing as cancelled.
Apologies. I must have read the Realtime column as actual times this morning. Luckily I have it still open and the times are there BUT I can see not in bold. Re opening it now shows cancelled of course. I first saw that change to cancelled after about 12 midday on my mobile while I was out. Which is over three hours after it should have run. Think I have learnt something new (or need glasses).

I find it strange that a 345 gets delivered to Old Oak from Derby and is then, only two days later, planned for a test run up the WCML to & from Crewe. After all Crewe is so much closer to Derby than Old Oak is so why not take it straight from Derby to Crewe ?.

Because the staff to do the testing will most likely be Wembley or Old Oak based, also most likely had some acceptance checks completed at Old Oak.

I can only imagine dragging the unit to London is cheaper than sending the staff to Crewe ?.
(I know I always preferred a day out !).

As above it most likely needs acceptance checks at Old Oak before they send it out on tests.

Isn't the point to get miles in for testing, not to actually get it to Crewe as fast as possible?

Apologies if this has been answered up-thread, but when is it expected that all 10 units will be in service by?

Many thanks

Yes. But they could start clocking the miles up starting at Crewe instead of paying to drag it to London first.

I wonder if those acceptance tests have to be done at Old Oak Common depot ?.

Alstom’s press release says:
The new trains will be manufactured, tested and introduced into service over this year and next.
So by the end of 2027.

Could? Maybe. But they've clearly decided taking the units to London is a better bet.

Old Oak makes sense as that is the depot with the most detailed knowledge of the 345s.

I feel like they’re making them quite quickly, if they’re close to testing the second and third units out of 10, and this order is meant to be tiding them over until they start building the trains for HS2 as they said, if the HS2 trains don’t need to be in service for a decade from now. Their original request was for a minimum order of 5 units, and they got an order for 10. Will they have to go back to the Government begging for another emergency order to keep the factory open before then again? Perhaps the 3 more options for trains on the original Crossrail contract of 13 optional orders, which haven’t yet been ordered? There’s no guarantee that they’ll win the forthcoming Southeastern or ScotRail tenders which are the closest to being awarded from now, and they haven’t won any bi-mode tenders before now for the other possible tenders, which don’t have any news of being close to awarded yet (Northern, GWR, TransPennine Express, Chiltern, possibly TfW, maybe SWR).
