Just watching Coronation Street and noticed as I have before that you can clearly see the Cigarette brands and even the prices in the Corner Shop. The prices are actually up to date (I wonder whose job that is) They are real Brands Embassy, Hamlet Cigars etc.

Strangely all the other products in the shop seem to be fake or "cover up" jobs.

Have Imperial Tobacco managed to "pull a flanker" with all this free product placement - interesting twist on advertising the only real brands clearly visible are those not permitted to advertise on tv !!

It's not new. In the nightclub in Eastenders, all the brands are (or were) real, but not in the Vic!

Are you referring to booze - arguably just as harmful but still legal to advertise on the box :p

It seems strange that they had to invent Newton & Ridley Bitter and Melbourne Star lager for the pubs, but can happily display all other types of products in the shops!

The ATM in the shop clearly shows the Nationwide Logo

Yes particularly as we are speaking about cigarettes ( you know I am a smoker from previous debates).

I can't believe this has slipped under the "health zealots radar " effectively advertising a banned product before the watershed.

What next - "wraps in The Rovers":p

I think that is actually "genuine product placement" following the recent changes to permit such deals.

On the other hand Imperial Tobacco must be rubbing their hands at all the free illegal product placement :p

To be genuine doesn't it have to show the stylised P logo before, after and during breaks? It may well have done since I didn't see it

Me neither, I'm sure I read that Nationwide were coming onboard perhaps it's still unofficial.

The most obvious product placement is in Stargate - the entire US airforce runs on Dell computers. Ugh.

I know that's not UK tv... but it's still TV shown in the UK. (Why aren't they regulated the same?)

At least it's not in your face like some things. iRobot ("Yeah!! Genuine 2004 Converse All-Stars." (delivered by Fed Ex), or Castaway which was basically a 6 hour long FedEx advert.. even Star Trek with it's Nokia car phone. Meh.

Struggling to find examples of it in UK tv other than the cash point in Corrie and a coffee machine in the kitchen of This Morning.

The Law has recently changed to allow product placement in the UK on TV- hence it is in it's infancy at the moment.

How do you expect US imports to be regulated?

I personally don't see the problem with product placement providing its not on the BBC.

Coronation Street does have the "P", as does This Morning (I don't watch these btw, someone else does), but those are the only ones I've noticed.

I'm pretty sure advertising tobacco products would not be allowed though.

Why aren't US TV programmes regulated the same as UK ones? It's a different country.

The Product Placement in the UK is subtle compared to
