What is the procedure for a track fire?

I was on the train from Lelant Saltings to St. Ives when a fire was reported between Carbis Bay and St. Ives. We are currently still on the train, but now at St. Erth, rather than staying at Lelant Saltings, where we boarded.

I will post any information about the situation as we are told it.

Water bottles have now been given out so we can cope with the 28 degree great. Now moving towards St. Ives, but no announcements yet.

If the fire is on the line then trains wont be moving till it is extinguished and safe.

If the fire is off railway property but still relatively near then it tends to be up to the fire service to make the call. An out of control bonfire with smoke blown away from the line wont see the railway closed. An industrial unit next to the line full of gas bottles however will.

In some cases and where possible at a large fire with risk of explosion they will get a freight train to sit on a line to act as blast protection and therefor allow trains on adjacent lines to run. Seen that once on the ECML.

Very rare of course.
