This morning there was a steam train at Colchester, it was in platform 1 whilst it was refilling with water. There was a large crowd on the platform admiring it. But despite multiple announcements by the station supervisor to keep clear of the edge of platform 2 they simply weren't listening and were right up to the edge of the platform. This was causing a lot of issues with the normal service. Surely these people appreciate that they have to keep clear of the platform edge?

In my experience the problem is mostly with the general public rather than enthusiasts per se, they just don't have the same appreciation of the dangers.

It's the same on the train,"This is my window and no one else can see out of it" attitude. Recently at Gloucester some minger wouldn't even let a passenger open the door to get on, unbelievable! One of the stewards eventually ordered him to take a seat.
Agreed, invariably enthusiast idiots. Same ones that trespass lineside.
Some stations now barrier off platform ends, when a charter is coming in. Seems to help. Have know BTP clear the lot of them off a platform too.
Probably the easiest answer, would be to exterminate anyone found to be wearing unwashed Tesco Value jeans, black trainers or shoes, an anorak, NHS glasses and packing they quality of camera equipment, that I can only dream of being able to afford?
I remember photographers gathering at the end of platform 9 at London Victoria when a steam train was in platform 2 as they can get a good shot from there.
Problem was that when the train in platform 9 was ready to leave the driver couldn't see the 'RA' as the spotters were all standing infront of it!
Of course I have never tried to drive my train in such a way that it blocks the view of a steamer or whatever from the assembled photographers on the opposite platform!

If you have a problem with someone on the train, tell the stewards - it's what they're for. Same with station staff on platforms.
I'd question whether the passenger crewmeal describes was just standing at the window and not interfering with the doors (as instructed).

Not sure about interfering with the doors, but the stewards on Vintage trains check all the doors and secure them prior to departure. This tool was armed with a pair of goggles and would not shift until told to sit down.

Ah yes, the "Window Merchant", an especially annoying type of enthusiast second only to the "Camcorder Hog" who think they should take precedent over the common or garden photographer or anyone else for that matter.

It really is only a matter of time before someone gets hit by a train/falls under a train whilst trying to view a kettle - and of course it would probably be blamed on the TOC/Network Rail !!

Yup, that's what a steward does. And that guy sounds like an arse!
The supervisor made so many announcements. I was going pass from plat 5 and thought it was unreal that they were not really moving at all. And on a very narrow island platform like that I was a recipe for a one under. I thought they would understand why they were being told to stand back. Obviously not eh!

If there's a picture involved, no chance. I once told a woman to get back on the platform, as she was getting a pic of the engine from beyond the end of the ramp - this woman later told me she was a driver's wife. The mind boggles.

Yesterday at Norwich, Tangmere was on Platform 4, and an EMT came into Platform 3 with people right on the edge of the platform, almost falling off.
Neither have I!

No it wasnt me, that was funny as hell because the photographers were all laughing about it as well. I dont think one of them was complaining because we all know its the risk you take when you have other running lines between you and the subject train.

Indeed you would have thought they would know better. Should be allowed to kick them off the station completely for their own safety.
