I'm on the Glasgow - Plymouth XC (4 cars with people stood througout the aisles) and it's just been announced that the train - currently near Conisbrough - is going to have to change ends and return to Doncaster.

Apparently there is some sort of "block" at Sheffield but no further information has been provided; the crew don't know what the nature of the issue is, or how long it will be.

Anyone know anything more?

The Darwin delay reason for some of the delayed services is:

This train has been delayed by a wartime bomb near the railway

Bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' in terms of resolution time if that's accurate.

South Yorkshire Police tweeted
We were called at 10.55am today (30 May) to reports a suspected World War Two explosive device had been discovered while groundworks were being carried out at Sheffield Forgemasters on Brightside Lane.

Our officers are currently at the scene and a 100m cordon is in place.
Looking at road closures on Google Maps this appears to be very close to the railway line.

Do XC no longer sign the route via Tinsley?

I appreciate not all trains can go that way obviously, due to capacity reasons, but I remember there being a regular evening working I used to get, for route retention reasons.

Looking at track diagrams I don't think this would help - it rejoins north of Sheffield and the entire Sheffield to Meadowhall section of line looks to be blocked.

NRES says wartime bomb between Sheffield and Meadowhall.

I think XC sign the bottom part but not the top part that takes you to Rotherham Masborough which they need for this issue.

EDIT effectively non-stop Sheffield

I was on the now cancelled Leeds train to Barnsley, everything towards Meadowhall is cancelled. EMR Norwich to Liverpool via Sheffield at 12:43pm will not serve Sheffield.

Sheffield Forgemasters is next to where the via Westgate/Kirkgate/to Doncaster lines all join south of Meadowhall, so virtually all West Yorkshire services are at a halt.

From RTT 1V87 XC ex Leeds is held south of Meadowhall (looks to have just missed the blockade) and 2B54 NT ex Huddersfield is at Meadowhall platform. Otherwise, Sheffield - Huddersfield, Sheffield - Leeds via either Wakefield station and Sheffield - Doncaster are all being held where they are.

Looks like 1V87 has reversed out of it, now the Swinton side of Rotherham Masboro, heading in the down direction. It had been stopped one signal short if Meadowhall, where 2R25 (Adwick-Sheff) is still standing

Route to Rotherham Central via Tinsley Single avoiding Meadowhall appears to be unaffected, route set for 5B74 whatever that might be out the north end of Sheffield station.

So I am guessing that the reason services are running ECS SHF-DON is that those drivers sign the route (obviously) but the conductors/guards do not. What a shame...

Yes, it made a wrong direction move back towards Holmes Crossing and back to Donny. Nice to see the back road via Broughton Lane getting used. Pity so few crew sign it though.

Is there a reason they couldn't have run it in service? Not on guards route cards?
The guard probably didn't sign it...... Not necessarily the driver.

I gave up and got the 1303 X3 from Doncaster Interchange.

There used to be a daily XC via Tinsley and Rotherham Central. I think it was something like 20:55ish from Sheffield, this was several years ago (certainly pre-Covid). If they no longer sign this way, then I would question the logic of that decision, but oh well.

Still one about 2200 goes that way. Though when we need them to go that way, they never sign it :D

1e73 ex Sheffield at 22:28 goes via Tinsley and Rotherham Central. Nice bit of PSUL red pen.

XC still sign Tinsley but it's only one depot (Leeds) that do which doesn't give much flexibility. Made worse today with the work near Church Fenton putting Leeds crew out of position compared to a 'normal' day.

Late running 1315 Sheff to Leeds 2N17 currently heading north via Woodburn Jn, and 1324 Leeds to Reading 1V89 currently coming south past Parkgate and Rotherham Central…
edit …and round the Holmes Chord towards Meadowhall!

The Northern ticket acceptance doesn't help anyone.

Cross-country can't run past Meadowhall.
Transpennine via any reasonable route... So via Manchester?

Only help really is getting to Rotherham, which still.

Surely getting ticket acceptance with LNER from Doncaster to Leeds for Northern tickets would be a help

Ok thanks.

I have relayed the information to a few others on this bus, some of whom were on the same train as me.

Everyone here seems to be in good spirits about it.

Glad I didn't wait for the next trains as it would have been absolutely packed; the train I was on had people stood all though the aisles and that was before any delays.

Total delay just over 2 hours (for some it would be even worse if having to make an onward connection from Sheffield); hopefully XC will pay the full return cost without quibble.

Could Cross Country have run ’Old Road’ Masborough to Chesterfield? Do drivers sign this?
Sheffield passengers could have detained Chesterfield & returned north.

I posted a few weeks ago that 1S51 took the Tinsley-Rotherham Central route because of a failed train at Meadowhall (I was expecting via Barnsley, and was pleasantly surprised at the unusual diversion). From memory, someone said that 1E73 (ish) (Sheffield-Doncaster-Leeds) ran that way, as did one TPE and one Northern service. It would depend on having the crew and a free path.

Via Tinsley doesn't allow you to cross over to Masboro' - never has, if Rail Map online is to believed, always been via Central.

This week there's engineering work between Leeds and Wakefield Westgate, so very few CrossCountry services running that way.

XC Leeds crews do, but often for example a Leeds Driver has a Newcastle or Birmingham TM, so no go!

No, the only bit of old road that XC crews sign is from Beighton Jct to Tapton Jct.
