Have any of you had any problems spotting/photting at any of the following stations?
–Slough, Ealing Broadway, Stratford, Finsbury Park, Lewisham? or any other stations near London?
Someone I know is raising this with Network rail and would like to know anyone who has had problems/confrontations?

Thanks

Martyn

Lets see, cautioned by a BTP Officer at Manchester Piccadilly, despit explaining I was following the correct guidlines about photography. The station staff at Meols have threatened to call the police unless I left the station. I've been thrown out of London Victoria despite writting for permission in advance AND having the information with me on that day. I've been asked to stop taking photos at Liverpool Lime Street because I 'looked suspicous'. Staff at Edge Hill have asked me to stop taking photographs and the staff at Wigan North Western have been a bit unsure about what I was doing and had a senior member of staff approach me about it. Otherwise I think i've been alright really :glasses2:

Remember, Network Rail property is private property and they can ask you to leave at any point without giving a reason., If you fail to leave you are then trespassing ( a criminal offence) and they can call the police.

Every time I visit a (manned) station I always ask if I need a platform ticket and/or permission to access the platforms without the need to travel
On all but on one occasion it has not been a problem, not even mentioning taking photographs!

I've only ever had a problem with the staff at Hull (and they're rubbish and jobsworths anyway :p), but apart from that, it's all been fine!

Told to "remove myself" from Platform 4 at coventry as i wasnt travelling and looked suspicious becuase i had a camera...

Told to stop taking pictures on other platforms, but took no notice, they didnt ring the police so they cant have been that bothered!

As soon as that member of staff had "clocked off" none of the other staff had any problems either...

I've yet to see or hear of a security threat which includes a camera, unless that person is taking measurements, diagrams, and photographs of the security features on the premises!

Thankfully, with most digital cameras you can preview the files, and I am quite sure you could show them to the complainant and ask them to identify any and all images which present a security risk
That would certainly be sufficient supporting evidence for a trespass defence

I've stood at Finsbury Park for about half an hour waiting for an the two morning HSTs to come in, I chatted to one of the platform staff before hopping on a Moorgate train, so I haven't had problems there.

Had problems at Poole ( my local station for 37 years!!!) by some Arse telling me I cant take photos when I know full well that I can. Was asked to sing in at Harrow & Wealdstone after being a pproached by a Lovelrly Silverlink Woman and a rather large ( built like a brick ****house type) BTP contstable with a rather large truncheon, so I went all sheepish and didnt argue... well I didnt want to cry after the burly policieman beat me up for trying to defend what I was doing :)

Filming at a station requires permission as you might not be filming just trains but an 'action ' film on low budget etc; or a tv documentary etc

I was troubled at London Victoria, details taken and such when trying to phot a duff there. Ive been told to move along at Euston. Told to go at St Pancras, had a nice chat with staff at Liverpool St and London Bridge. Ealing can be a bit of a issue though.

Message from my friend,

1)There are no restrictions on photos for private use
2)The guidelines are not being followed, hence confrontations.
3)Sign in at NR managed stations and speak to duty station manager at others
4)The Railway Magazine campaign is continuing to highlight problems, and they are working with the industry, including the transport police, to make sure regular briefings take place. The magazine would also like to hear of recent problems – railway@ipcmedia.com
5)If you have a problem and feel hard done, take it up with the customer relations dept of the train company who manages the station. If you suffer in silence, it will never get any better.

95% of the time you will get a response from the CS team at agrieved company basisly stating the train companiy reserves the right to allow photographers onto their station premises in this current time of security alertness blah blah blah to this effect. ANd 98% of the time nothing else will be done... not unless you have photograhic / videographic proof of them being arseholes then nothing will be done. 99% of the time the TOC's come out in support of their station staff. Been there, seen it, done it got the T-shirt and exclusive in News of the world!!!

You can understand why some get ****ed off when you get people like this blatently taking the mick and annoying the staff. Hope that guy looses an arm one day...

Also nice to see DelticMatt has mistaken an MTU for a valenta on the third train, he'll feel suicidal when he realises.

If you go about your buisness quietly and keep out of peoples way you should not encounter many problems.

If there's one thing I've learnt these last couple of years about complaints to TOCs then it is they are a waste of time completely.

I was involved in an incident at Brighton where a long handled broom fell on my head as I was walking to get on the train and on raising the issue with the nearest member of staff I received a torrent of abuse saying that it wasn't his fault and what should he do about it. Making a bad situation worse.

On complaint to Southern (both by phone and letter) I was 'assured' an investigation would take place into the incident (yeah, as if) and that the appropriate disciplinary action would be taken (even less likely). In three dealings with them about the incident I did not receive a single apology. All the TOCs care about is their shareholders and passengers are the least of the worries (well that's what it feels like from my perspective).

Back on topic, I remember trying to photograph the Solaris at Charing Cross a couple of years ago (January 2005 I think it was) to be told I couldn't photograph the boards for 'security reasons' (and she specifically said the boards as well). If I'm not allowed to know when a train leaves what's the point in publishing timetables?

I was about to leave anyway so I just put my camera away and went to the Tube. I couldn't exactly argue because she was rude enough to actually be on her phone at the time (and after ensuring I had stopped just strolled off), but if I did I doubt it would of got me anywhere.

If it says on the Network Rail site that we can help to be 'extra eyes and ears' in times of high security, why are we confonted in such a rude way? I'm sure we wouldn't have any problems with being told to move on IF it was done in a polite manner.

One point I just posted in another thread that would be relevant here is that I've been (more than once) stuck behind ticket barriers because the staff are off having a chat further down the concourse, and I cannot put my ticket through the barriers.

what a tw*t the guy in the vid, wonder what he would do if he lost an arm, apart from sueing and claiming an accident, he is blatently causing a danger not only to him self but to the driver off the train and the ppl on it.

What a complete ****. The Yellow line is there for a purpose. These two are morons are giving rail enthusiasts a bad name. Note after the driver blows the horn as a warning to get the hell away from the edge of the platform the guy places on the vid TA Drive, what an ignorant arse.

A complete pair of tossers that really should have been dumped in a bucket of acid at birth.

Hail All! <D

About that video:
Aye, he's an idiot. I wonder how he would have felt if one of those drivers had reacted quickly and slammed on the emergency brakes?

...And if I were to stick my arm out in front of an HST (Or any other train) in that manner, I know that I would lose more than my arm - In all likelyhood, I'd be catapulted a good 1/2 mile up the track in true rag-doll fashion!

As for spotting problems:
I'm not really a spotter (I.E: I don't go on spotting trips, I only spot when I'm waiting for a service and get bored, or am on-board a service and fancy a bit of high-speed spotting.) but I was once asked to either board my train or leave the station (London Euston) whilst standing near the end of the platform watching various trains come and go over Euston junction... :|

Farewell... <D
