Just been on the southern website,it says due to a technical problem they can't sell tickets through ticket offices or machines at the moment, however the portable equipment is still working. They've despatched extra RPIs to stations and you can buy a ticket either from an RPI or the conductor on the train.

No, webtis only runs on-line booking engines if the station booking offices are also down it sounds like a power failure or other serious problem at their computer centre.

of all the issues you could ever have! not being able to sell tickets must be pretty high on the disaster scale for a toc. of course they already have the season ticket cash though. i wonder how much they'll lose today

Not much as they would have as many staff as they can using the Avantix Mobile machines at the stations.

Although chances are barriers will be left open at several stations for pax to buy on board but some will probably just not bother buying, especially on short journeys, though the guard will probably doing more checks.

At Coastway stations without barriers nearly everyone buys on board anyway in my experience, despite ticket machines on most platforms and (apparently empty) threats of Penalty fares. Guards never complain as they get commission. I once had a guard ask me if I needed a ticket and he looked quite disappointed when I showed him a £10 CDR that I'd bought from the TVM.

I was at East Croydon at 06:45 this morning, long queue of people, barriers closed and one RPI doing tickets. All windows/TVMs down.

I only found this out when I went on the southern website to check the fare for a journey I had to make this afternoon. By the time I got to East Croydon station the ticket windows were open and the machines back on line, although they had notices on them saying they could not process any Oyster transactions.

I travelled from Chichester to Norwood Junction yesterday at 5pm. 1 Window was open but they has RPIs there too, went to one of them first, tried to charge me £16 for a return, which was way off the £10.55 I knew it was going to cost me. I asked me about if there was a Super Off Peak return available, he said to go to the counter which was fortunately open.

Wonder how many people paid more because the mobile machines 'couldn't' sell all fares.

FCC also seemed to be having some systems problems this morning - a notice was up at Potters Bar saying they could not issue monthly or annual season tickets this morning due to a fault.

all ticket offices and tvm's couldnt sell tickets yesterday. some of our morning conductors took nearly 6 GRAND in fares. Bearing in mind that we get 5% commission up to £2k and then 8% on everything thereafter our guards were happy to say the least!!

I've seen that happen on First ScotRail as well. The tiny screen on an Avantix Mobile won't show all the fares for certain journeys unless they scroll down. If the seller doesn't usually sell many fares or his usual journeys only have a few options, he may not know to scroll down.

An extra £420 or so (minus tax) would be welcome any day of the week!
