If a season ticket is shown by FCC as being from (say) Welwyn North to 'R1256' is it only valid in zones 1,2,5 and 6, or is it just shorthand for zones 1 to 6?

It's shorthand for all of Zones 1-6. :) It would be a bit impractical otherwise!

Thanks. I'm not that familiar with the line involved, so I thought it might not have any stops in 3 or 4.

Looking at the link from Trickyvegas raises silly question 2, if a season ticket on a FCC route from somewhere outside the travelcard area to london is issued to R1256 (instead of the other option, london stations), is that an annual travelcard for zones 1-6 (including DLR, buses, tube, London Overground etc.) plus all FCC travel between the starting station and zone 6, or just all travel on FCC between the starting station and zone 6 and all FCC travel with zones 1-6.

R1256 means it is an all-zones Travelcard, valid for unlimited journeys on any mode that accepts Travelcards within the Zones. This is basically everything apart from HS1, Heathrow Express and Connect to the Airport.
