Apologies if this thread has been asked in the past. However following on from the London - Plymouth thread, and mention of combining Anytime tickets with Rovers to achieve a saving, i was wondering if there is a list available of Rovers that a Priv discount applies to? I am aware of the All Line Rover, but NRE Rovers & Rangers pages don't always mention regional Rover/Ranger tickets that may have a Priv discount; unless i'm missing something! ATOC pages don't give much info either.

I hold a non-safeguarded pass from EMT; so any of their services and SWT are free for me. The mem isn't back at work until Wednesday for her to check.

Thanks in advance.

BRFares has a rover section if you don't have access to 'The Manual', though it might take a while to go through them all.

Much obliged for that; most useful. :D

I don't have access to 'The Manual', but it didn't take long to find the info i needed on BRFares. Have bookmarked it for future use.

Thanks again.

Most Rovers, and some Day Rangers, are available at PRIV discount, which can result in huge savings.

For example, a PRIV holder travelling from Birmingham to Penzance on a Friday, and back on a Monday, could save a considerable amount compared to the cost of a Birmingham to Penzance PRIV fare (which is overpriced, due to the fare being set by XC), by purchasing an Anytime Return to Cheltenham and then a Freedom of the South West (FOSW) 3 in 7 Rover to cover the part of the journey from Cheltenham to Penzance. This legitimately reduces the fare from £70.50 to £27.40.

Also if you use a Rover valid for at least 3 days then that is a "Season ticket or leisure pass" for the purposes of Condition 19(c). One of those, can be combined with any number of non-Seasons for a journey. Only one of 19(a) or 19(b) or 19(c) needs to be satisfied, so if your tickets are compliant with 19(c), there is no need to comply with 19(b) meaning the train does not need to call anywhere.

A good example of this would be a PRIV holder buying any number of point to point tickets between London & Rugby, and between Crewe & Preston, and combining that with a Heart of England Rover, on which a non-stop London to Preston train would be valid.

Note that some of the rover prices on BR Fares are out of date; they seem to have been increased after the fares manual (NFM14) was finalised. But the information on whether or not PRV discounts are available shouldn't change...

There is no 4 in 8 FOSW Rover. It's 3 in 7. The journey described can still be done, as long as the Rover isn't used on the Saturday and Sunday.

Another 40p can be shaved off if the Birmingham to Cheltenham leg is split a Bromsgrove.

You can do MUCH better than that.

Any help with London to Crewe (this weekend to meet with diverted ATW Cambrian trains). I've been looking at rovers after reading about them here, but I can't do much better than the PRIV single unless I do more than one trip in a week and then the savings nicely stack up!).

I've got PRIV, Staff oyster and arriva pass (lorol, Chiltern, ATW, XC and grand central).

Thanks in advance!

Are you wanting to take Virgin, and save compared to the £29.65 PRV single?

Is your Staff Oyster a season travelcard?

The original plan was Chiltern to brum for ATW all free. With the engineering works at Wolverhampton we're looking at an extra 2 hours, so yes the virgin train is looking tempting for the time saving.

I thought I had something with the west mids day ranger, but then realised it didn't count as a leisure pass for 19c

Staff oyster won't help here I don't think as whilst it functions as a travelcard season it is not valid on most NR. It should function as a travelcard season euston to Watford due to historical reasons, but virgin would like to deny this from what I've read. I think I'd be wary of arguing both that and whether it technically constituted a season for the purposes of 19c!

I would have thought that it would constitute a season, valid between WFJ and EUS on VT, and that therefore you could buy a range of splits between WFJ and CRE, valid on non-stop trains.

You could split:

Watford Junction - Leighton Buzzard SDS £3.20
Leighton Buzzard - Rugby SDS £3.75
Rugby - Tamworth SDS £2.55
Tamworth - Crewe SOS £4.80

West Mids Day Ranger should do the job from Northampton/Rugby (depending on which route taken) onwards. £5.65 PRIV.

Thanks guys those combinations do get it down nicely. Trying to find something official that allows the use of the oyster on virgin will be the tricky bit. Will have to dig through my paperwork and see if I can find anything convincing!

Does anyone think the staff oyster may fall foul of any of the wording about local authorities:

"one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include
Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are not."

Tfl is not a passenger transport executive technically, but who is the pass being issued on behalf of, is it lorol, tfl or the gla?

There's definitely a thread on here about a rail (TfL I think) employee who had to buy a Milton Keynes (I think) - Euston season rather that to Watford Junction because Virgin didn't accept his Staff Season ticket as a Season Ticket.

This is certainly a can of worms! I have been reading back and see the issues I may face as I mentioned up the thread.

I've also seen a quote that ATOC have ruled that a staff pass is a leisure pass for the purposes of 19(C), but I cannot find anything to back that up. Does anyone have anything more concrete?
