Does anyone know how these work? My dad's a priv holder and I might try and get him to join me on a Crewe > Inverness jaunt later in the year. If I'm on my own I'll go on the cushions, but he's too old for this. Will we be able to book a priv and a normal £38 sleeper supplement at the same time and get in the same compartment?

Sleeper seats are not available to staff travelling on PRIV - the same would apply if you're a 'dependent'. From Crewe, the cheapest PRIV rate is £25.80 single for Standard Class (the same price as travelling from Euston). You can book the sleeper at any staffed station and over the phone through most TOC telesales offices.

Depending on how far ahead you can book you may get a better deal booking the combined travel and berth ticket as opposed to buying a Priv discounted ticket and the public berth rate. Priv discounts are available on the SPI and SPC (Standard) and SPB and SPA (First - if you have a First class Priv).

You can use a travel facility box and pay for the berth also, according to The Manual.

Cheers. The main question now is that if my dad books this for himself, will he be able to book the other berth in the compartment for me, a non-priv holder, at the normal supplement rate?

You can mix an match, this is not a problem. If you want to share make sure you book them together.

If you have problems drop me a PM I have a friend who is good at sorting this sort of stuff.

Cheers. I guess my dad'll have to make the booking since I won't be able to book the priv but he'll be able to book my non-priv.

If you use telesales they'll have know way of knowing, unless they have started asking for numbers since July.

Hehehe! Anyway, he's retired so got nothing better to do with his time. I'll send him down the booking office at York to sort it all out.

What's the difference between SPI and SPC?

Mind how you go with booking offices that probably don't normally deal with sleeper bookings - it took us an awful lot of research, explanation and correction to get the correct PRIV discounted travel ticket + berth (which worked out around the same cost as the equivalent berth reservation to be used with a box - which is what we were issued with initially)

They're just the two different quota-controlled advance price bands, so once the cheaper has sold you'd then move up to the more expensive one. Similar to how "normal" advance fares are sold there are varying different ticket types signifying the different prices.
