Privilege tickets.

Today I purchased a New Milton to London Terminals Privilege Day Return for myself and, as I was collecting my grand-daughter from Victoria, a Child Off-Peak Anytime Return London Terminals to New Milton, as I am taking her back home on Sunday afternoon.

My ticket £22 no problem - the booking clerk asked if the child was a grandchild and when I said yes he supplied a Child Privilege Anytime Return for £2.

I queried this and he said that is allowed and she is covered by my PTAC.

He was quite certain so I accepted the ticket and my grand-daughter has used the outward half of the child ticket with no problem.

I have no desire to get the booking clerk into any bother so please someone tell me if this is correct and whereabouts in the ticketing regulations can I find it if I have problems in the future, because I have asked before and been told that there is no concession for grand children unless they are a dependant child

Have to say such a ticket does not exist. It is either an anytime return or Off-peak return.

Anyway back to you original query I know for retired or widowed railway staff then you can purchase priv tickets for accompanied children. Dont know if this applies to PTAC though.

You're quite right of course it's an anytime return but my mind was thinking along privilege returns, child returns, off-peak returns, anytime returns - I am 61 y'know - cut us some slack . Mind you - you can call it what you like for 2 quid.

With regards your reply, wouldn't retired or widowed railway staff have a PTAC?

I'm retired but have never been offered this for grand-children before although my own children used to get their own PTAC's when the were dependants

I've just twigged the answer, I hope.

When I asked originally if I there were concessions for a grand-child with a PTAC I didn't show the PTAC so the booking clerk wouldn't have known I was retired (kept my youthful good looks? :roll.

When I bought this ticket the booking clerk saw that it was a retired staff PTAC.

Only staff / retired from London Transport get a PTAC. Retired railway staff get a different card with boxes for free travel.

Having looked at the fares manual it does appear that you are entitled to take an accompanied child along for a flat fare of £2.00. Up to four children can be taken.
