Apart from the likes of Colas, DBS, DRS etc. Is there a list of locomotives available for main line use that could be used on charter trains etc?

I am wondering whether any of the following classes are still registered for main line use (diesel and electrics).

Class 20s, 25s, 31s, 33s, 40s, 45s, 50s, 52s, 55s, 86s and 87s.

There was a Class 40 out on a rail tour a couple of weeks ago so at least one is still main line registered.

WNXX is your best bet.

Off the top of my head, there's definitely at least one each of Classes 55, 86 and 87 which are privately owned and mainline registered. Classes 31, 33 and 40 probably as well.

but surely they run under the safety case of another operator rather than as a one man band

Operate under someone else's safety case, yes. Could be a different 'some one' every time. That doesn't have any bearing on its registration, which is primarily based on maintenance and machinery safety. That will be the responsibility of the preservation group/small business.

Certainly no Class 25's nor Class 45's at this current time. Since their withdrawal, I have never known a Class 25 to be registered for mainline use and to make it feasible, probably would need two at that. I keep hoping one day may be, but I don't see it happening sadly. More chance with a Class 45. The other's listed, there are some registered in one form or another.

I think there may have been a WCRC class 33 out on the mainline a few weeks back, I seem to recall seeing a shot of it leading a class 37 on a rake of passenger stock.

25278 is passed for main line running, but only between Battersby & Whitby, operating on the NYMR's safety case.

DarloRich is right, locos operate under a TOC/FOCs safety case. As well as having to be certified for the main line, a loco (or its owner) is audited by the operator before it will use a loco. That means that just because a loco is main line certified, it will not necessarily be used by every TOC. Other things, such as crewing, also have to be taken into account - a TOC/FOC is not going to train its crews up to drive loco XYZ unless it makes commercial sense.

50 007 and 50 017 under Boden Rail. Paul Spracklen's 50 026. Think the Class 50 Alloance 50 035 and 50 044 are mainline registered too.

Boden has his own safety case as he uses these for freight as well as private charter, may well be as Colas Rail but not too sure tbh. Believe these others will run under GBRF or DRS safety cases tho when run as a charter or as stock moves to pres railway, as does the deltic GBRF hires out for stock moves (cant remember if its Gordon or KOYLI)

DCR and DB schenker also provide safety cases as does WCRC. Pres locos usually run under one of these safety cases as opposed to the owner

Thats how I understand it anyway, i could be wrong....

What does a safety case involve in the running of a privately owned locomotive?

I would imagine the loco has to be in reasonable condition, fully operational with all relevant safety systems fitted. Not unlike a cars MOT certificate or a bus PSV certificate...

it wont be a different one every time. The owning groups will have a deal with an operator to run under their case.

It also wont be as simple as registering and running. There will be all of the associated Entity in Charge of Maintenance requirements etc to discharge. I am sure there is a railway equivalent V5 with a company name on it somewhere but that isn't the end of the requirements needed to run. Further I imagine getting the locomotive up to modern standards and onto an operators safety case is the hardest thing. Without that I bet you cant apply for a registration certificate.

No operators safety case - no running. You will have to show that people responsible for maintenance/overhaul are competent, that inspection certificates/test are up to date, that staff are suitably trained to operate the machinery, that you have detailed maintenance plans in place, that railway approvals certificates are correct and in date etc etc

There is a difference though between privately owned mainline registered and WCRC though. 33207 isn't a private owner loco, it's one of WCRCs.

However locos such as D1015 55002 55009 55022 37025 37403 40145 50007/017/050/044/049 all operate under different licenses.
On the other hand, 37025 operates under Colas and GBRfs cases whilst (as an example) 40145 is only currently used by WCRC
