Just to return to the original question, which was getting someone from London to Holyhead at minimal cost ...

How about a relative travelling from Anglesey to London (a one-way journey to join family) buying a return ticket and allowing the return to be used by the person heading the other way?

A breach of ticketing rules but very unlikely to be picked up on.
