Hey,

Sorry I'm new here so I would appreciate your views on a matter. So whilst in London I realised that I had left my PTAC card and oyster at home. I have done this a few times and it's not usually a problem. So I did what I usually do and went to get a 1072 (London terminals) to zone 1-2 with my priv. I was told that this was not allowed today

Now I've been sold this tickets lots of times as the underground section is only part of it (wouldn't even sell me a terminal to terminal ticket that included the underground.

I just want to see your views on this?

It is a bit of a grey area, in most cases a journey from London Terminals to Zone U12 will not involve any National Rail element so I can understand why the ticket office may have been reluctant to sell it.

It probably would be better to ask for something like Clapham Junction to Zone U12 (which is the same price) as then there is a clear National Rail journey involved.

No PRIV discounts for 'U' tickets. If your Underground journey involved stations where the + would have been valid, such as Clapham Junction to Finsbury Park, then you could have got a PRIV discount on that. But in the other response, a Clapham Junction to Zone U12 the PRIV discount would only apply as far as London Terminals with the U12 added on top at full fare.
If you have been given a discount on U12 tickets in the past, it would have been in error.

As Surreytraveller said, technically you are not allowed to buy tickets to underground zones. This is not that well known surprisingly (or perhaps some clerks are more generous!)

You can buy a through ticket e.g. Finsbury Park - Clapham Jn, South Hampstead - Acton Main Line etc and include the tube and that is allowed.

You can buy tickets to Underground zones - just the Underground add-on wouldn't (or shouldn't!) be discounted.

I think it depends on your status. Safeguarded staff can get a discount on Zone U* tickets, but non-safeguarded staff shouldn't (although it wouldn't surprise me if they were issued incorrectly).

Safeguarded staff can only get the discount by having a discount loaded onto an Oystercard. Although I'm unfamiliar with how it would work at an Overground staffed ticket office - are Overground fares all U* etc? In which case in theory they should be able to do U12 PRIV discounts I would have thought. I might be wrong, as I haven't worked in a ticket office since before the advent of London Overground and Oystercards.
