Maybe we could have a Top Trumps style system added, where people will compare ratings on their card to consider age, disability/condition, time with said disability, how many babies 'on board', distance to travel etc - and then people can 'win' the seat accordingly.

A scale such as 0.1 (common cold) to 10.0 (particularly severe ebola) is surely all that is required.

For example, a passenger rated 7.2 (scurvy caused by enduring lengthy voyage on rail replacement bus) would defer to a passenger rated 8.8 (later stages of pregnancy).

Yes, but we have to appease some people (ahem, women) by nominally allowing something to exceed man-flu in terms of recognised levels of illness.

Virgin might charge you, but if you travel on EMT, be sure to advise them that the NRCoC doesn't apply to them, or, in this case, your corpse, and therefore you are not applicable for any action prescribed therein, thank you very much.

Lol, isnt there a system for getting disabled parking permits? Maybe that could be used on trains?

Do these "cards" only apply to priority seats, or would their holder feel entitled to pick on anyone seated, and pull rank?

I always avoid sitting in a priority seat (although I've noticed it doesn't seem to stop many people even when there are plenty of other seats available). However I still worry that as a slightly-built, comparatively fit* looking woman (albeit over 60) I might be easier to approach with such a request than some big bloke with headphones on and a couple of cans of lager in front of him!

I also would like to know what the situation is if you have been allocated a priority seat in the reservation system. Hardly fair if you have to give it up, as you wouldn't have sat there otherwise.

*(ETA: That's "fit" as in healthy, not in the common vernacular ).

Me too. East Coast booked me two seats that turned out to be priority seats.

The train wasn't that busy so we'd have gladly moved, assuming someone didn't just take another seat in the first place, but it's an interesting question.

I think EC always keep a few priority seats out of the booking system. When I book I usually find a couple behind where I normally sit that are marked as being taken, but this is when the train has only just become available.

But how does someone know which seats these are? There are priority seats throughout the train, but the person that asks to use them isn't necessarily going to seek out the unreserved ones.

I think these seats should probably not be open for reservations at all.

Yes, that could work.

It would be important to know what system was in place on your particular train though, so perhaps tickets could be marked 'Trump' or 'Poker' or 'Any game permitted'.

SET would likely introduce another game which you'd have to pay extra for.

Absolutely ! I must confess that I was under the misapprehension that this indeed was the case, hence my (short lived) pleasure at finding empty priority seats on what was always going to be a busy service. I have never seen a priority seat reserved on my local services (158s), which can be heavily reserved, and assumed it to be FGW wide. Is the policy rolling stock concious ?

I've been reserved into a priority seat on an ATW 175. As there was a little old lady with a walking stick sat in it already, I sat elsewhere as I wasn't going to ask her to move.

I use TPE's 185s quite a bit, and it seems that the priority seats are very rarely reserved, and when they are it's because someone who needs a priority seat has reserved them. I often use these seats because they have more legroom, but would obviously move for someone who needed the seat.
