Need a bit of advice relating to the above. Several weeks ago I chose this option for my advance ticket for a Cross Country service tomorrow night my problem is that I've only just noticed that the ID I selected was my Debit Card which has since been chewed up by an ATM and I've now a replacement one with obviously different digits

My question is will it still be okay or will it cause problems? I've plenty other ID on me such as my driving license and other cards.

My experience (albeit on East Coast) suggests that the inspectors hardly ever check the ID number. However it would be risky to rely on this!

I suggest calling the TOC as soon as possible to see if there are any options to resolve the issue.

Phoned the TOC and was told as I didn't have the selected ID that my ticket wouldn't be valid for travel and would have to purchase a new ticket.

Typical of the rail industry, and especially XC.

In reality most guards won't check. The last time I had the misfortune to use this awful company, the guard did not check the ID of the person sat in front of me.

Am I surprised at XC? No, not at all, I expect them to be anti-customer. I am much more surprised that a member of this forum has purchased an e-ticket from XC, to be honest! I guess you've not read about the problems that e-tickets can incur.

I would contact Passenger Focus immediately.

I can find nothing in XCs T&Cs relating to T&Cs for this particular scenario other than the standard "Tickets are only valid when accompanied by the correct identification selected whilst making the booking."

I can't say what I would do, as I don't have sufficient information regarding the journey to advise.

I once bought a mobile ticket from the Chiltern Railways web site. It was an awful experience.

I do not recommend e-tickets or mobile for rail travel in the UK. Stick to paper tickets.

Unfortunately I'd not read about the problems before but in future it won't be an option I'll be using again. It was only yesterday when I looked out the ticket for getting back home it clicked that I'd no longer have that ID.

The journey is the 1935 from Newcastle going to Motherwell tonight. Just infuriates me that by having to buy a new ticket home they're the cheapest option at half price of East Coast as XC do same day advances.

I did ask a XC TM last night for his advice and he said if it was him as long as had other ID in this situation he would be okay with it but said others may not and contact customer services (who were totally unhelpful).

I personally would give it a go and hope I either wasn't asked for ID or alternative ID was accepted.

If then asked to pay, I'd explain that I fully expected my ticket to be valid and therefore don't have the money to pay for it right now, but would accept an invoice which I would then contest.

I'd then be in contact with Passenger Focus and insist on speaking to an XC manager. I'd also consider contacting the media (there are members of this forum who may be interested in publicising your plight!)

Slightly off topic, but what use is there in allowing for a credit card to be ID? It is possible to get duplicate cards (e.g. for a married couple) that have the same card number; and all you have to provide is the name, which could easily be a surname only; & last 4 digits.

If I was a betting man I reckon you will be fine. It might be that at that time on a Saturday there may be a few well oiled passengers on board so the guard will have no interest in coming through the train. If he/she does, if your new card has a start date on it of this month you could explain the situation, showing that along with other I.D. I would be very surprised if you were charged.

It's getting less likely. The last three partner cards I got for Jo have different numbers to mine which enables them to indicate who paid on my statement, and in one case lets her have online access to her transactions. It's not so useful when one person books cinema tickets for collection by the other.

Well after all the hassle, I bought an advance for the earlier 1735 train which was then cancelled from Newcastle onwards. Having to wait 2 hours for the next one which was the 1935 I was originally booked on.

So at least I'm not going to be out of pocket but will look into taking what Yorkie advised further.

To add to my last post I asked the lady TM of the 1935 if I had came with it would she have accepted it and she said yes. At least with my 2 hour delay even after buying the replacement I'll be claiming delay repay so not worse off at the end of the day.

Still think there should be a provision somewhere for things like this happening.

Slightly off topic but why do XC charge £1 for someone to go collect their tickets?!

It's not off topic. They charge £1 so you use the print at home option - which leads to this mess!

Use East Coast instead. Free delivery if your origin doesn't have a TVM, or it it does, then free collection. For each £1 you spend you can earn 1 point through their Rewards scheme. The points can be put towards Rewards tickets or various other things.

I'd boycott XC as much as possible - they don't want your custom.

Yeah think that's the reason I originally went for the print at home option if I remember.

Almost as bad as the Trainline and their booking fee.

I try to buy most my tickets on EC but with Cross Country advances I get extra off with my NUS card. In future that discount ain't worth the hassle there company brings. Where possible I'll be avoiding XC in future.

However for non East Coast tickets then your basket has to exceed £22 else you don't get anything. In such circumstances I will either go to Redspottedhanky (with cashback + loyalty points), or if cheaper, from the Toc I'm travelling with.
