Previous employment history question

back in 2002 I made it into the fire service but injured myself in the second week of training and ended up having my employment terminated. I am torn between mentioning this career path or not. The good side is what I achieved in getting as far as I did, however my fear is although my injury has gone, do you think this would make a TOC think twice about accepting my application.

I am on a Conductor course with Northern at the moment. I also worked as a Conductor for Northern (and first north western) from 2003-2006. I left because of a severe knee injury after being off sick for 4 months. I am now back at my old station with my same manager, after applying again over the last 12 months. I never thought I had a cat in hells chance of going back to the rail industry, never mind my old depot. But as my manager has said, things like injuries happen and as long as your work record is good in general, that is, you havent had nearly every monday off in your present position for the last couple of years, then you will be ok. So from my experience I would of thought you will be fine. And I would definately mention being accepted for the fire service, its such a hard job to get into... Good luck.

honesty is best ! You might not need to mention it on your application if it was years ago, but the first question on my interview was "tell us about your employment history from leaving school to the present day. . ." As said above getting into the fire service was an achievement in itself.

Many organisations will only be interested in the last 5 or 10 years, it should be specified on the application form if that is the case.

If so, there is no need to go back to 2002 at all. But if the question comes up about what you did before the application form then I would be honest. It's not as though you have done anything wrong or shameful in getting injured.

That question could be seen as discriminatory nowadays as it would reveal the approximate age of the applicant. That's why 5 years is becoming the norm.

Well I got asked it about 2 months ago. I'm fairly sure the interviewers knew my age from my application form ! And they could see me.
