why didnt virgin just do this in 2002 instead of wasting money on horrible stinking cramped voyager and pendolinos, isnt this just the obvious choice to refurb a perfectly working fleet of mk3s?

why fix something that isnt broke????

Well, there is the minor reasons that the WCML would probably not have 1/3 of the passengers it had today, journey times would put people off, however much you refurb a mark 3, you can still tell its pretty old (doors, droplights), we couldn't have had VHF and in general like it or not, Pendolinos have brought lots of improvements to the WCML.

It also allowed the best of the sets to be cascaded elsewhere (Great Eastern Main Line) where their limited top speed wouldn't be an, um, limitation.

So nowhere with old trains has had massive passenger increases? I think not. Its far more he infrastructure that needed to be brought up to scratch, shame it took so long to do so little though.

I think it's fair to say that you wouldn't get the VHF service with the Mk3 stock as the number of available paths would decrease (based on 110mph running). Even the 390s loose time when they run at 110mph when tilt is not enabled

Saw a Pendolino go through Wigan North Western yesterday, very odd livery, rather than usual silver it was white as the driven snow. Roof also wasnt red though it did have the Virgin logo on the side of the driving train and red/yellow frontage. Was I seeing things in high midday sun?

No, but I think I would be right in saying that VHF has brought passenger increases to routes such as London - Manchester/Birmingham and Glasgow

No, didnt have any black, was solid white apart from Virgin logo.

Maybe it was the light but im used to seeing ones like this:

Whereas it appeared more like this model

Virgin%20Pendolino%20Standard%20Buffet%20Car.jpg

Red top I might have missed because of angle viewing it pass on viaduct above.

Was it just the angle of the sun? That model is silver-bodied. Just like the real train.

Perhaps I see it different to you but the above is silver bodied with white stripes on the door while the model is white bodied with silver stripes on the door.
