Preston

I'm going to Preston tomorrow, it's a usual station stop on my way between home and uni but...
Is there anything I won't have seen before there? I know of the "haunted" tunnel to the north of the station though I don't know if it's possible to visit. (practically and legally.)

I'd like to add if Illegal I wouldn't visit.

Is this the Miley Tunnel that is supposedly haunted by a woman and screaming children? A story involving a girl that was pushed under the wheels of a train at Deepdale station - although that's a bit of a Preston locals' story!

I doubt access is legitimate or indeed legal but I'm not sure.

Head to Lancaster. Much nicer!!
When i was last in Preston there wasnt much there. Pleasant enough, but not a lot there. Some nice old buildings just off the high street, but thats it.

I think umontu is talking about railway related matters, anyone living on the Fylde Coast knows about the pros and cons of Preston City Centre!

Have you followed the disused goods line out to the docks including the level crossing before where the steam services turn back?

Yes it was Miley tunnel now I think about it and yes that is similar to the rumour I heard.

I knew of a girl being grabbed by a man on the train as it passed through a station (I wasn't sure if it was Deepdale) who then died in the tunnel.

Flickr is full of pictures of it so shouldn't be too difficult to access but at the moment being arrested for trespassing is off my list of things to do.

I have come across said crossing on the way south of the ribble but never followed the route to the wcml, I'm assuming it is the line to the West of the Royal mail platform where Northern seem to have a 142 occasionally.

If you haven't already, and even if you're not remotely interested in steam engines (I'm not), I'd recommend a trip on the Ribble Steam Railway, when they run in the summer, to see the line through the docks - I did it a few years ago and it was really interesting.

That was it, I knew it was something like that. Although, whether you believe the stories or not is a different matter. The people on SilentUK are obviously experts at this exploring - how they got to disused deep level stations on the London Underground without getting caught is beyond me.

Quite true I've wondered how they get away with it, some of them are close shaves though, rather like my local Hospital used to be before it was torn down.
In relation to them and the Fylde I have it on good authority there is a tunnel in Blackpool from the Tower to the Winter gardens, wonder if they could find it. I learnt of this was during some of my Roadie days during college.

I heard it was blocked, having worked in both I never saw any evidence of this tunnel though I was mostly on front of house work. The organiser was moaning about it being blocked at the time I seem to remember.

Can't see a reason for a tunnel to Bispham, not much there requiring it I'd have thought.

The line down to the docks isn't disused, a tank train visits there at least once a week. The line dives down from South Junction by the Royal Mail depot towards Strand Road. .

If you are eagle eyed, look on the left (as though coming from the south) as the train passes the 'bird cage' you will see the disconnected rails once used to access North union sidings. By the gantry containing the signals that protect the platforms you will see a sign which is worded 'Electric trains access to 7-11 roads only' (or words to that effect, can never remember the exact wording)

Any idea on the time the line is used during the week? Would like to see it further down the docks.

I do know where it is and I often try to look down it as far as possible.

I think it's either a Monday or a Wednesday morning usually heads down to the docks around 07:45 and comes back early afternoon. I'm not 100% on the timings though.
