I have a friend over from New Zealand who is looking to travel from Preston to Stowmarket on the 22nd July, being in Stowmarket before 1700hrs.

So far I'm seeing £56 for the bog standard run via London or via Leeds and Peterborough for £50 (Preston to Peterborough at £27.70 and Peterborough to Stowmarket at £22.30).

Is there anything cheaper going?

Thanks in advance.

Go via Leeds and the direct Peterborough-Ipswich route.

There are Advances from as far West as Burnley Manchester Rd . Splitting there on the 0936 (1514 into Stowmarket) with an Offpeak single for the first bit will be around £36. You can save a couple of pounds by starting an hour earlier and splitting at Leeds, but I wouldn't bother.

Generally, from our area the trick is to maximise the distance on an EC Advance (or as JakeF suggests a VTWC Advance from Manchester).

Is this the only journey they're making? No return trip or further journeys?

Preston to Manchester can be done for £4.
Manchester to Stowmarket can be done for £29.50 via London arriving 15:55, 16:34 or 16:55.

Total £33.50.

Many thanks.

It is the only journey, I think he will be getting a lift to the airport from Stowmarket end.

For completeness, the cheapest I've found so far is a Northern advance from Preston to Liverpool (£6.50), a Virgin & Connections advance from Liverpool to Coventry (£7.50) and a Virgin & Connections advance from Coventry to Stowmarket (£14). Total of £28 but with a departure time of 08:30 and an arrival time of 16:34
