Does the following suggestion from 2012 still offer the cheapest option for thos journey on 27th November?

Preston - Stockport and Chester - Shrewsbury. Both allow travel via Crewe, finish short on the first and start short on the second.

Thanks,

Sorry, but I don't think Preston-Stockport is valid via Crewe any longer. Chester-Shrewsbury is, though.

I don't know what the best option would be. I would say that providing the information on this post could save someone from making suggestions which aren't relevant to your situation.

Thank you for the reply....cheapest direct fare is £38.30 and this split was about £25 so good saving but if Preston to Stockport isn't valid then need to look for alternatives.

It is for 2 x adults travelling about 10 am on 27th November returining same day about 7pm.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,

One suggestion would be to buy a Two Together railcard: this would save 34% off the total. The card is £30 but you may be able to get it for £27 online with the promotional code "ONLINE". But ordering online may be tight in terms of the railcard arriving through the post by the 27th. The card would just about pay for itself on this one trip, so it's only worth getting if the OP will be making more offpeak train journeys with the same travelling partner in the coming 12 months.

EDIT: without a railcard, the following is a way of reducing the price but at the cost of increased journey length (prices stated are for two adults):

Preston-Liverpool: Northern Duo £19.80
Liverpool-Chester (via Birkenhead): £13.80
Chester-Shrewsbury: £21.60

FURTHER EDIT: without a railcard, for 2 adults returning the same day:

Preston-Frodsham £25.40
Frodsham-Helsby £7.40
Helsby-Shrewsbury £21.60
Total £54.40

Outward travel on the 0958 arriving 1227 and changing at Warrington Bank Quay and Chester. Various options for return travel, but in either direction journey must include a train between Chester and WBQ that calls at both Helsby and Frodsham.

If you don't mind increased journey times by travelling via Liverpool and Chester (via Birkenhead) travel from Preston to Liverpool via Ormskirk and make use of a Merseyside Saveaway Ticket from Ormskirk to Chester.

Preston - Ormskirk: Northern Duo £9.90
Ormskirk - Chester: All Zone Saveaway £5.10
Chester - Shrewsbury: £10.80

That would would out at only £20.35 each without a railcard.
Disadvantages are longer journey time, cannot leave Preston before 10.08 and you would probably only be able to buy the Saveaway ticket at Ormskirk (although not sure on that one).

You can buy Saveaway tickets at any ticket office, or from any avantix machine. I regularly have them issued in Cardiff (Various stations) or travelling to and from Merseyside on ATW, XC and LM

You don't need a Saveaway if it's just the train, just the Merseyrail all zones ticket will do.

That will save an additional 20p each.

Cheapest ive found in the past is a return Preston - Yorton then a Yorton - Shrewsbury ticket but one must use the stopper between Crewe & Shrewsbury.

If you'd like this, you can get it issued by asking for a single from Ormskirk to 'NORTHWIRRALLINES'.

Thanks for all the suggestions-having looked at the journey times I think these would be prohibitive for the amount of time we would get in Shrewsbury so on reflection travel via Crewe on Virgin Trains would be the best option.

I appreciate that the cheaper tickets are offset by longer journey times.

Looking at the original suggestion the Chester to Shrewsbury ticket is valid via Crewe and saves £3.20 compared to the Crewe to Shrewbury fare.

So far so good.

I guess the question is can the cheapest Preston to Crewe fare of £25.80 be improved on? Splitting at Wigan/Warrington only seems to offer negligible savings.

Would be happy for slightly increaseed journey times of up to an additional 20 mins say but I am struggling to find cheaper options on what seems to be a notoriously expensive and anomaly free route!

Thanks,

Off peak Preston to Gobowen return is £32.20 full fare and valid via Shrewsbury and Chester.

2T code with break of journey outbound allowed.

Thanks for the suggestions-the travel times I am getting are about 2 hours 25 mins compared to 1h 20 via Crewe. I can't seem to get a routeing via Crewe. What I can't understand is if Shrewsbury is only 18 mins from Gobowen why isn't a routeing via Crewe offered?

If I used this ticket to travel from Preston to Crewe then Crew to Shrewsbury would this not be valid?

Thanks,

The journey planning software drags you via Wrexham and Wolverhampton as the long waits between Manchester to Cardiff and Birmingham to Chester trains at Shrewsbury mean their quicker but route via Crewe and Whitchurch is still valid.
