I needed to go from Preston to Liverpool Lime Street today and it involved no less than 5 changes - surely a record for this journey?

Preston to Wigan North Western, walking to Wigan Wallgate, RRB from Wigan Wallgate to Southport, RRB from Southport to Hall Road, Merseyrail from Hall Road to Moorfields and finally Moorfields to Liverpool Lime Street.

Even if you didn't get a direct service; you could surely just go to warrington bank quay and then change to warrington central? I'm very unsure how this itinerary was put together.

I would not count walking from North Western -> Wallgate as a change, while it's technically a change it's such a short walk.

It’s crazy these days that there is no Sunday service on the Preston - Ormskirk line for Merseyrail connections to Liverpool

That's usually when a via point has been left in by mistake.

Via Southport will create this itinerary.

It really is a shortcoming of the NRE app (and possibly website) that a totally new search (i.e. changing both origin and destination) doesn't automatically remove the "via" point. I've come up with these silly itineraries before, thought "wha?", and then realised, several times.

I've accidentally done the same thing on Trainsplit before, bit easier to tell though because the "Advanced" block stays next to the passengers/railcards.

It'll be because a via point was left in, someone suggested "via Southport" would cause that odd route.

The same itinerary is generated next Sunday (1st October) for Preston to Lime Street via Southport:

Except next Sunday is four changes rather than five (because the RRB from Southport to Hall Road is not necessary as the line is open there).

You'd be better off taking the Stagecoach X2 bus, Preston direct to Liverpool & only £2 single than following that itinerary, the X2 stops outside Preston station, & is hourly around xx15, & takes just over 2 hours, on a Sunday.

Direct rail services are running. See the original post — the itinerary has probably come about because the ‘via’ option was inadvertently used on the planner.
