I'm travelling to Ely on business on Wednesday-want to arrive before 1900 and returning the next day about 1400 .-
I'm just looking through the various options-routing through London looks good in view of the fast VT service to Euston-don't fancy travelling via New Street.

Any other suggestions-what about East Coast up to York then across to Preston.

Ideally would want 1st part of the way if variance between standard isn't a lot and no problem with split tickets.

Could change at Manchester and get the EMT service to Ely (xx:43 from Picc), although it'll be hit and miss as to whether it's a 4 car working or not.

Is that the Norwich service that goes through Nottingham-what's the average journey time between Ely and Manchester.

Eep, 3h 25m

EDIT: The fastest journey time is by changing at Leeds and Peterborough (4h 14m), the second fastest is by changing in Manchester (4h 26m) and others are via New Street.

EDIT EDIT: And the ticket is priced by XC, so splitting will almost certainly be necessary.

Thanks-don't think I fancy the EMT option-bad enough from Sheffield to Manchester!

Potentially could do an advance to Euston then KGX up to Ely then return on another route for a change-the Peterborough via Leeds option sounds ok-what's the best splitting points on that then.

Preston - Ely SVR: £77.50

Preston - Doncaster via Leeds SOR: £24.30

Doncaster - Ely SSR: £46.30

That one only saves £6.90, I'm not too good at this

That sounds ok-could see if there's any advance tickets to cover the Ely to Doncaster part of the journey.

Peterborough and Leeds would be a good start.

A Preston - Leeds route Burnley return is £18.20, valid any train, return within a month. This route is Standard only.

There are currently £44 First Class Advance tickets available on a wide range of Leeds - Peterborough services on Wednesday (tomorrow) afternoon. The trains leaving Leeds between 1540 and 1805 offer At-Seat Dining, which I would recommend. See this page.

Splitting at Peterborough is essential. The only Leeds - Ely First Class single fare available tomorrow afternoon is £96. Single Peterborough - Ely is £9.60 Standard or £15 First Class.

To return another day 2 x singles required, at an extortionate £19.20! To avoid the rip-off, buy from Stamford Lincs, and start and finish 'short'. The SVR is £16.60. Valid after 0930. Yes it is sometimes cheaper to buy further. Crazy but true!

That looks good-so is the East Coast 1st Class offering tea/coffee and biscuits only unless you pay the supplement.
