Preston to Carlisle Sat 27 March

I will be doing the above journey, I have had a quick look at train times.
There are engineering works that day, Some services are substituted by bus throughout others are by train, however the journey times seem rather long, does anyone know the diversion route.

Example
12:05 Bus Service Direct 2 Hours 15 Mins

13:05 Train Service Direct 2 Hours 32 Mins

The 13:05 would suit me but I can't find much info on it.
What route will it take..

It's highly unlikely to be the Cumbrian Coast, put it that way!!

The normal diversionary route is the S&C. Or to be more specific, Preston-Blackburn-Clitheroe-Hellifield-Settle-Appleby-Carlisle. Quite a scenic journey, but a shame it will be on a rattling Voyager.

2 hrs 30 is about right for that journey. Typical speeds on the S&C are around 60mph.

Correct, routed via Settle and Carlisle.

Might be a Pendolino drag rather than a Voyager though

I'm just confused with why the services are starting/terminating at Preston, instead of simply running a direct Birmingham-Glasgow, reverse at Preston?

Perhaps it's VT trying to diagram the 221s differently than normal, with them returning to the depot they started off with at the beginning of the day, after running over the S&C?

Does anyone have confirmation on whether any are indeed 57+390 drags?

I posted the same question on Railchat, and got the response that a "11:52 from Glasgow to Preston" is running, despite online systems showing it as a 11:40, with reservations bein set up for a Pendolino.

Either way, i'm going to enjoy watching the diversions over the next few weeks or so. I'll probably be doing Preston-Glasgow-Preston on the first day of diversions.

To me 3 things seem strange regarding the 13:05 service Preston to Carlisle

1. As voyagerdude says, why a Virgin Running Birmingham To Preston and a Preston To Glasgow.

2. Why almost 30mins wait at Carlisle.

3. Why on the Virgin website can I buy a Preston to Glasgow ticket But Not a Preston to Carlisle on the same service, You can on Transpennine Web site.

To partly answer no. 2, this may be the length of time for the 57 to be attached to a Pendo for a drag (if this is happening). I was at Carlisle in 2007 and it took them a good 10 mins to attach the loco in some cases. On one train it wouldn't attach properly so the Pendo was terminated at Carlisle and the pax went on the next one which came in from Glasgow.

The only train which is currently "set up" as a Pendolino (as in reservations are set for Pendolino not Super Voyager) is the 11:40 Glasgow to Preston.

I don't think the 13:05's path between Preston & Carlisle would be ok, for connections of of it at Carlisle, with it accelerating slower than a 221.

It would still depart ontime, with the 26 min stop though.
