I am travelling to Bristol on Wednesday 2nd September after 16:00-it seems that there are no advance tickets on the Virgin Trains website for this route-any advice on split tickets for First Class Advance or cheap First Class appreciated-it would need to be travelling back the next day.

Splitting at Cheltenham is often useful for cross country journeys, but the fare from Cheltenham to Preston is only 6 quid less. You could try splitting at extra places, I had a quick look but nothing obvious came up. You can try splitting at one of the online booking engines or using Avantix Traveller.

Virgin are rotters for advance tickets at short notice. If you split at Crewe, you can get some advance tickets with Arriva going via Shrewsbury. NRE shows CRE-BRI tickets at £28 on many trains in the afternoon. Add on a single PRE-CRE for £17.50 and you'll get there for a total of £45.50.

Go through London; there are advances available for both Preston-Euston and Paddington-Bristol. Guessing at your return times, I make it about £150 (I'm guessing at the cross London cost; I always bike it) rather than £238 for an open via Birmingham

Thanks-going with the direct route as need to get there within 4 hours.
How about this. Preston to Crewe SOS £17.50, Crewe to Cheltenham SDS £30.80 and Cheltenham to Bristol CDS £7.30. Total is £55.60. The through ticket from Preston is £57.50 so it's not much of a saving

Unfortunately the OP wishes to return so that combination doesn't work. It does raise an interesting point though, that shorter distance Singles (sometimes even Anytime singles) can be cheaper than a long distance Single (which are often priced as just a few pence less than a return).

How silly of me not to look at that part of the OPs question.
