This morning I alighted at platform 1 of Preston. Ticket in hand ready for the check on the footbridge, as per. At the top of the stairs, however, no hi-viz revenue inspection. I was momentarily stun-locked, the routine of footbridge ticket checks no longer a part of my Monday travels.

But then, the new reality hit me. At the bottom of the footbridge stairs, a welcoming committee. The existing Virgin staff ticket checkers halfway down the ramp have been joined by two hi-viz women, a Virgin uniformed woman, and a series of taped off funnels. It has the look of the entrance to a gig, with VIP sections taped off and guarded by bouncers.

I showed my ticket to the hi-viz women. They had no time at all to look because Virgin woman stepped over, wagged a finger in my direction, and declared "Yes, good morning, thank you". No eye contact. Efficient to the end, she moved on to the next passenger behind me.

I know this is a Charleston we have danced before. I thought that the combination of ramp checks and footbridge revenue inspection was clumsy enough at a station without ticket barriers. Now it's moved on to something resembling the Manchester Apollo when a band are playing.

Could this be the only solution to ticket checks at Preston? Or is there any chance of something less convoluted than half dozen staff from two different employers waiting at the stairs?

It probably wouldn't be too hard to barrier the three entrances, though that wouldn't catch users of the Lancaster loophole. Two regular barriers and a wide gate at the ticket office entrance, controlled by the ticket office. The same at the Fishergate entrance plus two TVMs, and again at the new entrance. Flows aren't *that* large that that would be much of an issue.

The other option would be to put gates at the foot of the ramp, close the footbridge to 5-6 entrance, and close the footbridge to 1-2 completely, but that would cause some long walks and subway congestion so is probably not workable.

I always find that any checks at Preston are a bit hit and miss in that there always seems to be a least one way in or out of the station without checks.

I don't object at all to ticket checks (bar slow staff actually causing an obstruction) but I must say what the OP describes sounds hazardous. How far from the steps are they?

It sounds like a potential accident waiting to happen in terms of trips and falls if a queue develops. Northern especially may want to go back to the previous arrangment which seemed to work ok.

That is obviously not an option so I don't know why you took the time to type it.

I have no idea why you are obsessed with gates on a station whose layout is obviously not conducive to being gated.

The hi-viz women were standing at the fence/barrier at the bottom of the steps. This is already a natural "funnel" as you.might already know. Behind them, at the usual place on the ramp, was the Virgin staff checking with additional taped off "aisles" to the platforms.

Last time I was back in the UK - early August - travelled in standard back from Man Airport on Northern (but had purchased a First Class Single) but left ticket on the train. I apologized and said the amount I paid and that it was F and he let me through. He was on the steps just coming off the bridge.

Preston Platform Ticket checks. That takes me back. I was a frequent traveller for a while between Lancaster and Leyland, and having to stop and present a ticket in the middle of a tight connection, with all my excessive mobile worker gubbins, really got my goat.

Why can't they just monitor the entrance/exits like any other station.
