Preston - Nuneaton

Afternoon all

I'm travelling from Preston to Nuneaton on Friday 12th June 2009 and need to get there for 1100. I wanted to booked an an off peak return priced at around £44 with a 2R restriction (only valid on the outward service if the train arrives at or 1030) on the 0817 train which gets in 1051. However according to National Express East Coast journey planner this isn't valid.

However if I booked three separate tickets Preston - Warrington, Warrington - Crewe, Crewe - Nuneaton and travel on the same trains, the crewe - nuneaton portion is valid on the 0901 to Birmingham New Street (the 0817 ex Preston). This is the same off peak return ticket with a 2R restriction, but obviosuly priced cheaper around £28.

Can anybody explain why the first ticket is not valid, but the second combination is or am I just been thick

I haven't looked at this one, but sometimes the journey planners don't interpret the rules correctly if a change is involved - they apply the rules to the change as if you are starting or ending your journey.

The FRPP states that restriction code 2R has the following conditions:

Validity Code 2R (VT)

Outward Travel
By any train except those timed to depart Mondays-Fridays before 0900.

Return Travel
By any train except those timed to depart Mondays-Fridays before 0900.

The problem seems to be that you have misinformation in what exactly 2R states. The impression you have been given, that it is arrival before 1030 that is restricted, is incorrect.

The outward train from Preston departs at 0817, this is before the 0900 condition stated in code 2R. When it departs Crewe at 0901, it then becomes valid (just) using any ticket with restriction code 2R as this has passed the 0900 time restriction.

Thanks for the replies regarding the information on the travel restriction code. It seems that 2R restriction definition has been updated from NFM02 to NFM 03, so hence the difference, which I wasn't aware of.

I'll have to download the new version and see what else has changed.

In the meantime I just get ticket combination 2 which comes down to about £49.00 as opposed to the peak returned priced at £62.

You could get your ticket to Hinckley or from Blackpool, whichever is easier. It's still £48 though.
