Thanks to you both for the compliments, the picture was taken by resting the camera on the foot board of the 444 on the next siding, holding the camera steady and pressing the button.
It came out rather well considering its only a compact camera.

3417 is owned by the Bluebell railway but is looked after by some people from Wimbledon depot.

Oh ok, is that unit also known by the name of "Gordon or William Pettitt" or similar.?

I did go on a similar 4 car unit a few years ago on the GCR line, diesel hauled of course. I think they had only recently obtained it and it was well used that day, seemed very popular.

The CIG at the GCR went for scrap quite some time ago, after being damaged beyond repair by vandals and metal thieves. :(

That is awful, very sorry to hear this. I suppose they cannot store everything inside sheds etc. (A sad sign of the times I guess.)

It is named Gordon Pettitt.

12CSVT has answered the other point.

Thank you.

AIUI the Electric Railway Museum near Coventry plan to install a section of track with 3rd rail. That will do away with the need to install OTMR, etc. needed for mainline running which, as mentioned above, is expensive. And I think hauling them with diesel locomotives (as is done on heritage railways) does detract from the experience.

I can't recall hearing that before, given the costs and issues involved i'll believe it when i see it...

It seems like health and safety gone mad (I know it's a cliche but it's fitting on this occasion) that the powers that be are insisting that trains which are never going to be in public service should have to have CDL fitted.

yes that is exactly what it is

Get along to the Epping and Ongar railway if you want a ride. They have a green flavored one - very comfortable it is to!

Did some of it not get used by NR in a test train?

*(TBH I dont really understand all this 4-WIG stuff. It is an EMU to me!)

Regarding safety systems, it is presumably only GSM-R which is missing from the two Lymmy units? The set I rode on, a short while before they were withdrawn, had what I recall assuming was an electromagnetic CDL set up, with angled panels protruding from the base of each door which I gathered housed magnetic contact plates locked and released from the Guard's van? And OTMR has been mandatory since before they were withdrawn has it not? Happy to be corrected on either count of course!

did they not have an exemption because they only worked their branch line - i cant remember :(

I did think that, but then they routinely went to and from Bournemouth which would presumably mean OTMR would still be needed for the main line running, bearing in mind it's applicable to everything, pax trains or otherwise. I'm pretty sure about the CDL, I think.....!

Thats the bunny and yes the buffet car was re-used by NR because the suspension is set up to carry heavier weight, such as ripping out all the buffet gear and installing the test gear in its place.

i haven't got your fancy TOC depot access!

Please explain exactly how you think it's not ?

Exactly why have two friends of mine been allowed to jump out of planes at full height, with open doors, something that strikes me as a bit risky to say the least, yet I am not allowed to travel on a VEP on the Southern Region.

Explain to me why friends of mine regularly walk up mountains in all weathers, regardless of how they might get caught in an avalanche (which have killed several people this year in this country), yet I am not able to travel by choice on a vintage charter on a VEP.

We are not allowed to travel by choice on a train with a steward overseeing every carriage and its doors, on a transport system with a signalling system that makes it safer than every road journey in the country - yes, that is health and safety gone mad - please feel free to roll your eyes as much as you see fit.

No, the unit in use went back to Bournemouth for stabling every night on its own. I think they may have had an exemption from OTMR and were limited to that regular run. They ran via Fareham and Eastleigh to be turned periodically, there must have been some sort of special arrangement for that too.

Yeah, let's bring in the daily mail - why not.

If we can't be bothered - or rather can't come up with a decent argument, the Daily Mail makes a suitable tar brush regardless of whether anyone actually reads it or not.

Touche.

I've also seen them stabled at Fratton car sheds and in the bay at Southampton Central, so they certainly got around ok.

i can come up with a decent argument, going through all the ROGS and explaining why each piece of kit is needed but my head hurts, i'm tired, grumpy and in a bad mood

I apologise for the  and the daily mail:)

No need to apologise. To be honest, I see why they need the signalling and radio equipment (all charters will be needing that anyway) . It's just the CDL which I can't see - and which will make it impossible to ever travel on the mainline in a VEP, EPB again, since no one will ever be able to pay for it to be fitted to a preserved high density unit.

well it may be that no one has yet made the case for operations without it! And as expensive as an Engineers option report is it will be cheaper than 47,000 door locks and the associated equipment!

Anyway the one on the Epping and Ongar is in good nick! Well worth a trip out

Oh, I definately intend to give it a visit (and the thumper there as well - which I've also had the pleasure of travelling on in the past) :)

See here:

"A short working demonstration railway, electrified by conductor rails along its route to allow trains to be demonstrated and ridden in by visitors. Operation takes equal emphasis to display for visitor interpretation."

And also "A working museum, not all the items will be purely static. Operation of the trains in the way they were built to be operated is important to us." I do not think they will diesel haul EMUs and am sure they will be keen to avoid this and they also talk about some (im)practicalities with using battery vehicles (the other option often mentioned when electric heritage railways get talked about) in their prospectus.

It's nice to see the unit out in the sun, I took the pic this morning about
9.30am on the way to Waterloo from inside a Class 444:

It needs people in it watching London go by. It needs the passengers to live.

Saw it pass through Southampton wednesday evening at about 17.40. Now I've remembered to check it's now dropped off realtimetrains; anyone know where it was going?
