It's getting stranger every day referring to 60050 & 60086 as 'preserved' locos, todays news on WNXX is that 050 was unloaded at Colwick yesterday and is now at the front of the shed, it's commented "While having been touted to the scrap industry, it has been established (at the time of writing) 60050 & 60086 remain unsold"

There's lots of things you could take from that but it would all be heresay, opinion and guesswork so it is just going to be a "wait and see" thing regarding their future then!

Indeed. 050 and 086 are certainly not ’preserved’ in a heritage sense.

Similarly, Wikipedia still lists 37418 (owned by the same individual) as ’preserved’ even though it’s on long term deployment at LORAM.

I did recently meet the main person behind the C60PG, they had a stand at the local model railway show which he was using to sell stuff to raise money. He has enthusiasm but as noted needs some direction and some support which sadly while I would love to help I don't have time for. Some of the website content is ill advised (eg mention of a specific loco they/he wants to bid on, mainline running etc) but fundamentally many preservation groups started on similar grounds and time will show whether they grow or sink. The recent openess from the class 56 group who are well established but are short on labour and funds is probably a great proxy for the challenges of preservation so the reality is that a non working 60081 plus poss 60100 which was/is designated for preservation are likely to be the only 2 survivors.
surely 60 001 can be preserved swell

Apologies for the completely uninformed question but it’s my understanding that a class 60 would be difficult to preserve in operational condition due to the complexity of its electronics. Could those electronics be somehow bypassed to leave a locomotive that’s more conventional but without the massive haulage capability?

Doubt it as electronics usually control traction systems, which would previously be controlled by relays etc.

I assumed that would be the case. Which I guess means that preserving one in working order would be quite a challenge. But it’s been done with the class 89, a complex loco of similar vintage……..

That’s true, but I think that was accomplished with the backing of LSL, not sure other preservation groups would have quite the same sort of financial resources?

A lot of locos have electronics on them in one form or another, class 50s have some notoriously temperamental electronics!! AVR (automatic voltage regulator) on a 45/1 has early electronics, which can be unreliable. Many locos have electronic AVRs fitted as some were fitted in BR days but as they were of 1980s era tended to be better than those of 1960/70s.
I'm sure there's a few wizzkids out there who could deal with complexities of a 60!

Yes, though I don’t know how far the AC Loco Group guys had taken the restoration before the agreement with LSL came into being. And, from recollection, weren’t engineers from Brush Traction involved in resurrecting the 89?
Anyway, hopefully Mr. Hosking likes class 60s!

Indeed. But, in relative terms, is that like comparing my 1980s Ford Capri with a modern, say, Range Rover? The electronics on one of them could be repaired by a competent home mechanic, the other needs real specialist knowledge.
Essentially, is the equipment on a 60 beyond the capabilities of people who haven’t been trained to work on the locos?

He already owns one, 60081. No idea how much work it would need to be operational but a new power unit would be required to replace the one which catastrophically failed

Reported today on Rail Scene facebook that 60050 & 60086 are on the move from Kinsley, 086 was loaded onto a trailer and moved across the yard while 050 is due to be moved tomorrow, both have had their engines removed and there are numerous destination guesses but nothing with any corroboration as yet

** Updated 16th May - Reported on WNXX that 086 was loaded for repositioning then 050 was loaded for removal from the site which is due to get underway this morning. "While these two Class 60s have/had been touted to the scrap industry for disposal, it looks like a buyer has stepped in at the last minute and (it has been indicated that) these two Class 60s are now to be moved to Boden Rail at Colwick / Rectory Junction"
I have made enquiries and been advised that 60086 (along with 050) has been acquired by ESH. Additional confirmation has been provided by RAIL Magazine on 31/07/2026:

The active EPR fleet comprises 37218, 37407/423, 37501/510/512, 37611, 37800/884 and 37901 – all previously owned by Edwards – as well as 60063.

This is expected to be joined by some locomotives selected for overhaul from 60001/007/ 010/011/015/017/019/020/024/ 039/040/044/054/059/062/065/ 066/074/079/091/092/100.

The spares donors are former EPR 37069 and ex-DB Cargo UK 60003/005/012/023/025/027/030-037/041-043/045/ 048-053/ 058/067-069/071-073/ 077/078/082-084/086/088/089/ 093/094/097/500.

Since then I have also seen photos on Facebook that show 60086 already unloaded at Colwick and in the company of long term 'demics' 37069 / 57087.

Given the new ownership of 60050/086, I suggest that further discussion shall take place within the established ESH Rail Services thread.
