Hi one and all!

Firstly let me introduce myself: My name is Ruth and I am the daughter of a Preservation Railway Volunteer. I am currently completing the dissertation part of my Masters in Heritage and Museum Studies and I have chosen to look at the satisfaction levels of Volunteers in the East Anglia, South and South Eastern regions. Do you give time to/recently volunteered at any of these railways?

Appleby-Frodingham Railway, Bluebell Railway, Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Bressingham Steam Museum, Bure Valley Railway, Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway, Colne Valley Railway, Chinnor & Princes Risborough Light Railway, Cholsey & Wallingford Railway Preservation Society, Dean Forest Railway, East Hayling Light Railway, East Kent Railway, Great Northern & East Lincolnshire Railway, Great Whipsnade Railway, Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway, Hythe Pier Trams, Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Kent & East Sussex Railway, Leighton Buzzard Railway, Lavender Line, Lincolnshire Wolds Railway, Mid-Hants Railway, Mid-Norfolk Railway, North Ings Farm Museum, North Norfolk Railway, Nene Valley Railway, Rother Valley Railway, Rural Life Centre, Steams Dreams (the Cathedral Express), Sittingbourne & Kelmsley Light Railway, Swindon & Cricklade Railway, Volks Railway

If so, I would really like to hear your opinions good or bad! It doesn’t matter if you are a trustee, manager, paid or unpaid, your views matter. During chats with volunteers I’ve noticed that the Preservation Railway sector is largely neglected and I want to help set this right by bringing this to the attention of a wider audience, but I need your help!
All you need to do is spend 5 minutes filling in a quick questionnaire; there will be no expenditure to yourself and although personal info is requested, it will not be made public in anyway. I take confidentiality seriously! Please take time to read the participant info form before completing either of the forms as it contains information you need to know. There is one for trustees and one for volunteers:

Please read this first; http://volunteermscstudy.synthasite.com/ it contains important information you should read before completing either of the surveys.

Volunteer Questionnaire: http://www.esurveyspro.com/Survey.aspx?id=ff506144-9f87-44ed-acc7-0774b64a35ed

Thank you for taking the time to read this rather long post and I look forward to receiving your replies, the last date I can accept forms is 30th December, 2008.

Merry Xmas!

I do a few. I'm 16, but I have been into volunteering since I was 13. Its really rewarding, and you can pick some brilliant skills.
Very enjoyable.
On your list, I do the East Kent and sometimes, the Kent & East Sussex.

Hello all,

Firstly, may I thank all those who have taken part in my study. Now I need to ask a further favour of the managers and trustees out there. I am looking for willing participant railways with a written volunteer management policy to provide me with a copy. This is so I can provide a balanced view with regards to the information provided by the volunteers themselves. Please do not worry, it is not my intention in anyway, shape or form to pick any specific railway out for criticism (or praise!), but to allow me to compare your policies as a group against current mainstream academic thinking/ volunteers opinions in order to make suggestions as to whether or not railway heritage falls under thier guidlines or if indeed any differences should apply.
If you are happy to contribute, may I ask you to forward your copy via email attachment.
email address is leangreenfocusmachine(at)hotmail(dot)co(dot)uk -sorry gotta avoid those spiderbots!
Many thanks in advance,
