Presented wrong Apple Pay card, charged a maximum fare. Next steps?

Hello, recently I was travelling on London Underground having tapped in with my default transit card via Apple Pay and I used it to tap out as well.

Unfortunately when a ticket inspector in the middle of the journey was checking tbe tickets, tapping my phone on the reader did not automatically open Apple Pay like it does on the yellow readers. When I opened the Apple Pay manually it automatically used my default payment card on the reader (not the one that is set as default for transit). I did not realise it at that time, and all was fine at that time. However, the next day there was a maximum fare charge of around 16 pounds on that card.

The problem here is that the default payment card is in my partner's name, not mine, unlike my default transit card so the charge went to his card.

My question here is - is it worth trying to dispute it, to prove that it was me using both cards? If not, I am ok with this charge as long as it doesn't lead to further troubles. I was not issued a fine, is it possible that I (or my partner) will be?

Thank you so much for your help.

Don't worry, you aren't in any danger of a fine or anything except the maximum fare TfL has already charged you.

I think they'll be minded to refund you provided you have the journey history (available on the TfL website) proving you did pay for your journey in full. You won't be the first (or last) to have made this mistake so contact them and explain what happened.
I'm sure they will lecture you about presenting the correct card in the future (I would recommend checking your settings on your phone to double check what card you have set as your transit card so you don't make this mistake in the future; as that could lead to your card being blocked and then actual trouble) and then refund you. If not, no loss as they won't be pursuing anything further either way.

I know you might be tempted to let it slide now that you know that tfl won't pursue it any further, but if you make this mistake again in the future and your card is blocked it could be troublesome. I'd argue it's in your interests to get it sorted and have the charge refunded so that won't happen.

Thank you, Mattplans, that's a relief.

I will at the very least have my default transit and payments cards be the same from now on so I don't run into the same issue again. What you said about future issues after the card gets blocked makes sense, I will consider contacting TfL to resolve it.

It's not just a London problem. Same on Manchester and Edinburgh Trams. If the default payment card is not the same as the one for transit it is frustratingly easy to do exactly this, and can be expensive.

This is a problem with their systems that ought to have been addressed before they rolled out the transit mode feature.
Put simply, the inspection devices were not designed to work the same way as the normal readers that you touch in and out on.

Absolutely contact them for a refund and if they don't understand what you are talking about refer them to this article:

Download the TFL GO app!
Register both card numbers that you used, if Apple Pay the number from within your Apple Pay wallet.

You will get a history of your journeys made, it will show you incomplete journeys. Via the app you can add entrance or exit taps! Plus apply for refunds from TFL
