looking at overnight adventure from Prescot to Scarborough on to Whitby and return to Prescot
or indeed the reverse
looking for ideas re itinery and cheapest way of doing it with Disabled Rail Card
looking to travel this week

There are no trains from Whitby to Scarborough, so that part of the trip is better done by bus (X93). For the Prescot-Scarborough leg, the best way is the Transpennine Mainline. Prescot has two routeing groups: Huyton and Wigan, so it wouldn't be allowed to go via Liverpool without splitting. The most logical way to do Prescot-Scarborough would be changing at Huyton, Manchester Oxford Road and York (the TPE service to Scarborough is curtailed to York) or at Wigan, Manchester Victoria and York. Starting the journey from nearby Whiston would reduce changes to 2.

For the way back from Whitby to Prescot you'd need to change at Middlesbrough and Manchester Oxford Road if going to Whiston (the same options are available to Prescot, via Huyton or Wigan).

York would be the place to get an SVR to. From there you can get maybe an advance single to Scarborough or a CDS. There is a nearby station to York whose CDS to Scarborough undercuts the CDS from York. PM me for details. To get from Whitby back to York there is a very good value off peak day fare routed not via Darlington. A bit less good value as a single though.

Do you have a disabled bus pass? Or just want to get there saving money? There's always the 840 bus from Whitby back to York. But the esk valley line is highly recommended. The Scarborough branch less so but to make it worthwhile I'd get one of the Mk5 sets if locos are your thing.

Splitting at Dewsbury for York brings the fare down to £31.75 compared with £34.10 if buying a straight through ticket, if you use Trainsplit most journeys will be changing at Huyton & Newton Le Willows or Wigan North Western and Manchester Victoria :

I can't comment on possible splits, but I would look at booking Offpeak returns through to Scarborough, and a single Whitby to York (or vice versa) NOT VIA DARLINGTON. The Scarborough ticket would be valid to/from York.

With the Dewsbury split, this is significantly cheaper than booking to Whitby plus York-Scarborough; however, booking through from Prescot this advantage vanishes.
