Prescot - Carlisle Off Peak Return - Is it valid via Settle and Carlisle route

Hi recently had an enjoyable round trip to Carlisle via Barrow and back via WC Main Line - With railcard - as Off peak return

Made me wonder if I could do the same route - but via the Settle and Carlisle route via Carnforth

Would the same ticket be valid / considered as a reasonable route? Ticket only says all routes 'via Lancaster' and ticket line check suggests via Style / Carnforth is the same price

Any ideas / suggestions?

It is permitted (traceable on map GV), but it may raise eyebrows.

I wouldn't be doing it without an itinerary; I would advise obtaining an e-ticket with the itinerary displayed on the ticket.
