Going by this thread, we're supposedly incapable of operating a door handle !

It has been been found that opening a door handle slows down dwell times for trains at stations, hence why there is automatic doors on trains on Network Rail accept if they are preserved trains on the network.

I always thought that the problem was passengers not shutting the doors after themselves, causing staff to have to run up and down the side of trains closing slam doors? Well that and sticking your arm out of the window is less than ideal, particularly if you're wearing a white shirt and the door is covered in Valenta exhaust.

I'd hardly call Mk3s preserved stock. They're still in mainline TOC service. Legacy BR stock maybe.

Mk3 coaches are still in mainline service, however if you asked say First Great Western who probably have the largest amount of MK3 coaches at the moment, they would say to change the doors so that they are automatic sliding doors like the ones used by Chiltern, so that Class83 pointed too in their post.

Oh I'm sure they'd prefer to have plug doors, however I was pointing out that your statement that passenger stock on NR except preserved stock is incorrect. Both the Mk2 and Mk3 coaches are still in daily service with various operators.

Except when the conductor/guard is in the train selling tickets and takes 30+ seconds to reach the door controls.

And in years ago, when most passengers closed the doors after alighting, I have had station dwell times between 9 and 15 seconds. Anything less than 20 to 25 seconds is now rare on the trains I use.

I've never had the pleasure of travelling on one, but out of interest, how would this compare with a phase 1 CIG (which is pretty much the gold standard of express stock that I've experienced) ?

CIG stock probably similar space to the Southern Railway stock, but somewhat harder seat padding. I think the Bluebell Railway has some Bulleid loco-hauled stock.

Four on the Swanage Railway, two already restored and two awaiting restoration. In all only 16 survive in preservation out of more than 800 built.
1947 48-seat first and third class compartment coach No 5761 had the distinction of being the last Bulleid coach in traffic with British Rail.

Apparently all passengers are able bodied and carry no luggage

Are you always this delusional?

It's just "common sense", right?

Something that seems to translate as "obvious to me", regardless of how well-trained they actually are in the matter.

Handles on the inside, and maybe some sort of door closer (Either electric, or maybe the spring type you would see on a door in an office) Would sort the problem.

It probably should have been done in the mid 90's, however due to the belief the stock was going to be replaced in at least some duties (IC250, Pendolino, IEP, Delayed IEP) (even back then) It never happened.

Have you never heard of a guard ?

Many thanks - I will have to make a visit some time.

My favourite intercity rolling stock:

1) Class 43 HST + Mk3 carridges
2) Class 180 Adelante
3) Class 91 / DVT + Mk4 carridges

The guard might have his work cut out on a full length HST! The fact is opening a mk3 carriage door is a nuisance!

Possibly so, but the fact that our stations and trains aren't full of lost souls wandering up and down in perpetuity suggests to me that train and station staff are well versed in providing assistance where necessary. Anyhow, for the majority, it's a minor inconvenience rather than a major obstacle.

The point being that it is enough of an obstacle to unnecessarily increase dwell times.

I really don't get this objection to modern technology when it clearly does the job better. "Oh, we apparently can't use handles anymore!" - what rubbish. It clearly makes things more accessible, more quickly. It's got nothing to do with us being lazy.

I appreciate your point (only in terms of InterCity stock), however is the question of the door handle enough of an issue to alter the overall perception of comfort for a whole class of rolling stock - particularly one as comfortable and well appointed as a Mk 3 ?

I don't doubt it's easier to push a button, but the way some people go on, you would have thought we were forcing people to travel in roofless trucks.

And frankly, aside from the door handle, I do prefer the presence of an opening window, at least in the vestibule, as it enables one to get a bit of fresh air now and again. Admittedly not so good if the vestible door is jammed open (definately a weak point of Mk 3's) but generally very welcome.
