Pre TOPS numbering game

Here is a game on the sixties loco numbers. Here are the rules
1. You have to try and guess the type of Loco it is from the number
2. You have to say what class it was under TOPS for example the number is
D1036 you have to say class 52 western.

I must admit that I've never really understood "D-numbers" at all, but I can still answer most of the list above. I won't do that however, as that would be cheating on my part. hock:

Regards D-Numbers: Was there a specific way that they "worked" (In the way that TOPS numbers "work") or was every loco numbered sequentially irrespective of design and capability?

As I recall D1-D1999 were Type 4; D2000-D4999 were shunters; D5000-D5999 were Type 2; D6000-D7999 were Type 3 (but the D7500 series was type 2);D8000-D8999 were Type 1. D9000-D9999 were meant to be Type 5, but the D96nn series were Type 1. So all based on power rating.

i'm a child of the 80's so only really seen the TOPS system and as far as i can understand it its class number and number off the production line (please correct me if i'm wrong)

and i dont even know what TOPS means lol
so in regards to Pre TOPS i am absolutely clueless lol
