PRE-NRW Split ticket help?

Not my area of expertise so any help would be appreciated. Going for the football on Saturday. Travelling from Preston to Norwich...

Looked at splitting, but not sure how much it can be split due to coming back a different route.

Getting the 0644 to MCO to connect with the 07:38 straight to Norwich.

Coming back on the 17:54 via Peterborough and Nuneaton and Man.

There is a 16-25 railcard involved. Any options other than the £72.60 SVR?

Also, what have you found so far regarding splits? Have you tried trainscanbecheaper.info ? If you can take a look first and let people know what you have found, we can then comment on that and advise if we know of any other options.

Nothing can be saved by "splitting" if you are coming back by a completely different route as the train must call at the station where you change from one to the next (National Rail Conditions of Carriage - Condition 19) unless you get Advance singles and commit to specific times (not a good idea for football matches in general).

You could look at splitting at the points where your routes diverge (for instance, Stockport and Peterborough/Ely I believe). You might then be able to get a comparatively cheaper (Super) Off-Peak Return for the centre bit (though check the routeing permissions on a booking engine to ensure it allows both ways) and get Off-Peak Day Returns for the bits at either end.

Splitting at Manchester and Peterborough would save a few pounds, but I haven't looked any further.

One odd thing I've noticed is that NRE suggests waiting for over 90 minutes for a 'bus from Manchester Piccadilly. Don't do that.

The Virgin train gets into Stockport at 22:35, and there's a Wigan stopper which calls there at 22:40. If you take that to Salford Crescent, you can then catch the 23:16 from Manchester Victoria to Blackpool and get to Preston at 00:10.

If you're delayed a bit, you can walk or Metrolink it from Piccadilly.

Just in case you've looked at a different timetable, NRE suggests 17:54-18:48 Norwich-Ely, 19:15-21:07 Ely-Nuneaton, 21:33-22:51 Nuneaton-Manchester and 00:30-01:30 Manchester-Preston.
