There are alot of stored class 720's within the Greater Anglia fleet leaving me curious on if they were meant to be used on any timetable uplifts pre-covid? I myself only recall Class 755's were meant to be used for certain services, but was dropped post-Covid.

If anyone would provide me the details of the planned service enhancements pre-covid. I would be appreciated.

I don't know how accurate it is, but the Wikipedia page, citing from Railway Gazette International (http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/...trains-for-abellio-east-anglia-franchise.html; I don't have a subscription) says that
  • Ipswich – Cambridge / Lowestoft should be hourly on Sundays (this bit has been implemented)
  • Hourly Ipswich – Peterborough with some Colchester – Peterborough services
  • Sudbury services extended to Colchester Town
  • 4 tpd between Lowestoft and Liverpool Street
should have happened.

The West Anglia class 720 requirement has been reduced in 2 ways.

The peak hour timetable has been reduced with the removal of the Broxbourne terminators and the diversion of peak Hertford East trains to run via the Lea Valley instead of the Churchbury loop.

Lots of trains that were 8 car before covid, with class 317/379, and would have gone up to 10 car class 720s, are actually run with only 5 cars. For example, the only evening peak 10 car trains out of Liverpool Street for Cambridge are the 1713/1743/1813 stoppers and the 1737 fast.

The spare 720s are mostly due to less commuting after covid, plus the never implemented third train to Norwich. Add in the increased capacity of a five car unit, however cramped that may be, and there's your spare units.

Looking at it long term the GA franchise did have some provision for future growth too.

On the east side i recall also that there was to be an uplift in the frequency to Yarmouth, to effectively half hourly all day, also was to be a 3 TPH Liv St Norwich by extending the Liv St Ipswich, and IIRC an extra TPH Liv St to Southend Vic

On the west side, there should have been an extra TPH to Hertford East all day, and there was to intended to be an extra TPH Liv St Camb all day, fast Tott Hale to Audley End, and an extra Stortford to Liv St TPH all day

None of these timetables were ever published, so not clear whether they were at all deliverable.

Note per the attached the extra services to Norwich, Southend and Hertford were planned for May 2019, ie not when the main recasts happened.

yes found something else i created after reading the franchise agreement. There were 3 train service requirements, the old (and effectively the current) one, TSR2 effective May 2019 with some frequency enhancements, and TSR3 per below with many frequency and journey time enhancements

Were there any explicit improvements pre-Covid planned / suggested on the assumption that Crossrail 2 would be built?

In fact the 18:07 Liverpool Street to Kings Lynn was once 12 coaches (3x 379), with the rear 8 detaching at Cambridge or Cambridge North, a very nice alternative to the overcrowded Kings Cross trains. Nowadays the service is only 5 cars (1x 720) and only goes as far as Ely. Quite disappointing from GA as GN has re-introduced many of its 12 car services in the peak.

The fact they never saw the light of day probably answers your question, regardless of Covid.
